Title: compost accelerator or worms
Post by: flower Power on March 24, 2007, 18:59:33
New member... ;D first post...
I have just started a compost bin, its a big plastic one that the old home owner left behind. I have filled it as advised & brought 2 small cartons of red worms from fishing shop. Being a bit inpatient i was wondering if i could use a powder accelerator as well, or would this harm my worms.  ???
Thanks

Hi Flower Power and welcome
I have never used any accelerator in my compost as I think the secret is to have as much compost material as you can as fast as you can so it will heat up and therefore break down faster.

good luck

The best accelerator is your own pee. Seriously, it's nothing more than a bit of added nitrogen, so why pay for it?

I agree with Robert let the pee and worms do the work

Unadulterated pee kills worms - read it in the DT last week. Knew the topic would come up some time sooner or later, and now it's sooner  ;D They advised diluting it with water first.

Don't put that much in compost, or it soon starts leaking through the bottom and going to waste. A watering every time you put a good load of material on the heap is enough.

I use undiluted pee and the worms seem fine
