Title: Tomato folk lore and facts.
Post by: Jeannine on March 23, 2007, 20:20:55
I think this might prove interesting.

I'll ma ke a wee start.

More than 5000 varieties.

Sizes from the size of a black currant to over 7 pounds.Guiness book of records and I am probably out of date)

Bathing your dog in tomato juice will get rid of the smell of a skunk

Native to the Andes

Come in most colours, red, pink, orange, purple, black, white ,peach, cream, green and blue.

Tomato ( as in potato) or Tomarwto ( old spelling)

People are very protective about their favourites.

Tomato seeds have been in space, the seeds were then given to school children

In 1995 ,2000 year old seeds were discovered in a bamboo tube in a tomb in Western China. Some grew and fruited, they had the same tsate but looked very different.

Tomato seeds under more usual conditions remain viable  for ten years.

Were once considered aphrodisiac.

Tomato ketchup was originally Chinese.

It takes 300 cherry tomatoes to equal the calories in one choc ice.

There are  genetically engineered tomatoes. I know the name of only one Favr Savr and no I don't have any seeds.

There is a good start,

XX Jeannine

One can grow 1000 varieties and still not find one as boring as Moneymaker ;D

Growing tomatoes is addictive-I gave up cannabis aged 18

To describe a tomato is as hard as describing a dog-you just know

Weren't they called Love Apples by the Elizabethans?

Anyway, I know for a FACT that tomato seeds grow in your gut and the ensuing tree chokes you.

Robert are you telling us it works or confirming that is what they were called mmm

It's what they were called, and people thought it worked. If you believe it has an effect, it probably will.

I don't know if they actually cause mouth ulcers but they'll certainly exacerbate any predisposition to them because of their acidic content.....they certainly do that in peeps who suffer from arthritis & make it flare up. Now that would be terrible  :(  what a horrible tomato-less life to look forward to :'( :'(

If you have sunburn, cut a big ripe tom in half and rub the affected area with the flesh.  The juicy flesh soothes the burn quickly.  Don't know why, but my old dad swore by it!  ;D

I  know when I have cold sores I cut a slice of tomatoe and rub it on the affected area - it heals far quicker and eases the pain.

Jitterbug

Good grief - I thought that I was made sowing about 2 dozen types - all the while wondering where the heck I was going to grow them all.  There goes the rotation plan - its looks like its going to be Tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes

Depression can be caused by many factors-growing `Moneymaker` when one seeks flavour can lead to symptoms of denile of self worth and clinical depression.

Prescribe `Black Russian` not prozac.

Sorry-and welcome-I`m teasing-not an MD but I got a Phud in Psychology once upon a time ;D
