Title: spring cabbage
Post by: shirlton on March 18, 2007, 16:55:21
My spring cabbage has all gone to seed. It looked really healthy earlier on but everyone has gone up now. The only thing I can think of is that I planted them too close (cos we were rather short of room) Has anyone had this problem

i bought a mixed bag of seedlings inc april cabage, kale, pointed cabage, and brocc$ili and i am not sure which is which but so far i have 2 plants which look like its either gone to seed or its broccili  :P

if the weather calms down i will pop up one evening and check it.

I'm wondering wether it will be any good cutting them down and crossing them to get some young stuff. have done about 5 so far. Thank goodness we have rabbits

I don't think you will have planted them too close, Spring cabbage can be planted closer (for protection) than their summer cousins.

I think it is more likely that 'wind rock' that has checked them, plus I am not sure if the milder winter may have played its part as well.

just had dinner of trout, new pots and my own spring cabbage and curly kale.  ;D

delicious!!!!

some of the kale plants however do seem to be forming flower heads, but the cabbage look and taste great.  :)
cabbages were planted close together like Tee Gee says, but the kale have a lot of room to move so maybe wind rock could be a factor.

Some of my spring cabbage has gone to seed as well. I had a row of 10 and 5 went to seed, so far the other 5 are OK!

I like the flowers so long as you cut them when they are still tight buds.  My kale has now all gone over, but I did enjoy the flowers before pulling them out of the ground.  ;D
