Title: Haircuts for leeks?
Post by: carolinej on March 18, 2007, 15:58:42
Hello,

I have always chopped some growth off the roots and shoots of leeks before I plant them out. I have heard some people say that this is unneccessary. I think I can see their point. After all, the leek wont have to recover from being cut, the root system will be stronger, and there will be more green leaf to make energy from the plant.

What should I do this year? Any advice please?

I never do, for the same reasons as you say.

Much depends upon how long the roots are & what sized hole you're trying to put them into.
If no problem then, as said, let'em be!

Like the rest used to do it and now rarely bother..
It is supposed to work like winter pruning promotes new growth...
