HI
I have an asian pear which has loads of buds and i am worried about the forcast frosts.
Do i need to cover it.

ooh i have a golden delicious apple and its started to get a few buds it would never have occurred to me to cover it! good thinking batman ;)
Mine too and flowers on my apricot and peach, I am just hoping not too bad as too big to reach to cover really. XX Jeannine
I would cover them with fleece if possible - I think the critical point is the first week or so after they've set. If they haven't set you might be okay... based purely on what I noticed when I worked on a fruit farm. (I should mention we only had soft fruit, not top fruit but I'm not sure flowers really know the difference!).
set?
??? just what i was thinking!
Oh, sometimes I accidently use "made up on a Norfolk fruit farm" words without realising they're made up. Sometimes they're right.
I mean once they've been pollinated & the fruit has become viable, there's a time when they're especially vulnerable to frost.
I knew what you meant Ollie - must be a Norfolk thing. :)
My nectarine is in full flower right now - I'll be covering it with fleece/ bubblewrap asap before the cold snap gets here.
Cambourne7 - where did you get your Asian Pear? I'd love to grow that. I just bought four from Sainsbury's (fruits, not plants!) and they're not cheap!
Well,I guess I could move them all into the dining room if it gets really bad.XX Jeannine
Hi
I got my asian pear from ken muir before christmas, its not in flower but i think its at the stage where the leaves are starting to form.
I popped some fleace on last night but the wind blew it off, went to check it and the tips hap a little black on them so now now has double layer of fleace :-)
The wind is so stong all my camelias which were in full flower are being blowen to bits but luckly there are new buds behind the flowers and they have been in flower for about 2 weeks already.
