lots of posts about planting things too early, but what about getting stuff going too late :-\
I'm just about ready for 1st early spuds, but I don't want to start anything off too soon until I have a couple more beds prepared. I'm hoping that most things will catch up but there must be certain veg that have a long growing season and need to be in the ground soon (so I should concentrate on getting beds ready for those) but would be extremely grateful if someone could tell me what they are ;D!
I'm hoping to grow most of the basics:
potatoes (1st early, 2nd early, maincrop)
beetroot
carrots
parsnips
peas
beans (runner, French)
sweetcorn
courgette
cabbage
broccoli
onions (white, red, salad)
garlic
leeks
are there any of these that have a "best in the ground before" date? ???
Now that's a good question! I'll try a few. Depends upon variety, what you want & how soon.
potatoes - up to July
beetroot - up to July
carrots - up to June
parsnips - up to April
peas - depends
beans - depends
sweetcorn - up to June
corgette - up to June
cabbage - depends
broccoli - ditto
E&OE!
onions
leeks
thanks Tim, think we may have crossed in the ether!
does the "depend" depend on variety?
or type eg cabbage spring/summer/autumn-winter?
(E&OE ?!?)

think I might be spending a lot of time trying to absorb lots of info :)
thanks Tee Gee ;D
Dare I reply after that? The Chap with an answer to everything.
But I will.....
a. Yes.
b. "Don't Blame Me"!! (Errors & Omissions Excepted)
Garlic should be in now!!!
Chillies should be started now & maybe melons [ask Jeannine :)] - if you are planning to grow any that is.

Pm your email address via this site. I have a full colour chart from the garden society on my PC. (it cant be posted on here - tried before). It is colour coded for when each veg / salad crop should be sown indoors, outdoors, under glass transplanted, transferred under glass, & harvest. It breaks down ealry, late & main crop but not different varieties. I have one laminated in my shed.
Its a godsend.
we sowed our last carrots and beetroot in early September last year and although they were small they were very edible - still picking the beetroot!(Kent)

Thanks for those few kind words Emmy, it would appear that a few others do too!
I got my 50,000th visitor yesterday not bad I thought when you consider it has only been up and running 28 months and only received 6000 visitors in its first year.
