as a total newbie what would you recomend growing for my first year?ie type, varirty and spacings :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\
my plot size is 50ft by 50ft
and i live in east devon
how big is your plot ,and where is it.Potatoes, runners, beetroots, carrots, onions ,grow wot u like to eat.
Hello Panther and welcome. ;D
Last year was my first year with 1/2 a plot, and grottbags is so right. Don't waste valuable space on stuff that wont get eaten. I put a row of swiss chard in which grew beautifully but I couldn't make anyone eat the stuff!
New potatoes, salad stuff, the list is endless but shove some parsley in-it freezes well-and some flowers. Marigolds and sweet peas for companion planting, lupins for nitrogen fixing. Plenty of reading on this site and loads of tried and tested advice from people far more knowledgeable than me. ;D
Hi Panther, parsnips, radish's, spring onions, dwarf beans and sweetcorn but as Grot and Emaggie have said, grow what you like to eat and you can't go far wrong. Remember spuds take up a lot of room so you might want to grow them in containers putting them anywhere there's a space. Happy digging. ;D ;D ;D
I agree grow what you and family like to eat,
radish is fast I love the globe ones eat off the plot.
Leeks are great and can be used in stews in winter instead of onions.
Runner beans are easy to grow.
I use my trowel as a messure most things are a trowl apart hee hee.
Does not matter if you sow the seed or buy the plants just enjoy.
Hi Panther, I'm new to this too. I think I am being a bit over ambitious because we are planning on planting almost 30 different things! I got very excited when I first heard I was getting an allotment and went crazy buying seeds...Anyway we are planning on planting what we really enjoy eating - tomatoes, spinach, courgettes, peas, butternut squash, chard. We are also going to try growing peppers and aubergines. I'm just going to try a bit of everything and see what does well and what we eat the most of.
Thats my theory this year too, plant a bit of everything and see what does the best. And see what I can get the kids to eat!! ;D
