Just in case this has a bearing on whether it is likely to be a Jasmine (I don't know anything about them) but I should have mentioned that this shrub is basically a thick upright woody main stem, approx diameter of 1-1.5 inches I'd say, and all the leaves are at the top of the stem, I'm assuming that is because it has been competing for light.

I shall read up on Jasmine tonight, together with all the other suggestions for the others.  Really glad I posted as it's helping me a lot.

I would say that you have a Nandina domestica, aka Heavenly bamboo (although nothing to do with bamboo!).  In my view this is an excellent evergreen shrub, with flowers, berries & it changes leaf colour.

I'd say a Nandina too.

Had a look through my books last night and I came to the same conclusion.  Can it be pruned hard back?  It's just that at the moment it is just one long bare stick with leaves at the top, not exactly a great specimen!

Thanks for the suggestions

Sorry by my Nandina looks nothing like the above.

Looking and the internodal distance, Id say its a climber, probably a jasmine.

I still reckon it's a Nandina - I found a couple of photos on websites:

2. In berry:
