Title: Ideas please on----
Post by: Rose.mary on March 12, 2007, 11:34:59
potatoes.
I would be pleased for ideas on which way to plant my potatoes. I have two beds running from North to South, each one being 6'x 25'. Would it be better to run the rows length way (and how many rows) or across from East to West and plant 4 potatoes for earlies and 3 for maincrop?

I know everybody will give different answers but I need advice to play with in my head to get a better picture.

Ever grateful

Rosemary

Although it is not imperative, I find it best to position them where the sun shines up the rows (where I can).

If not directly up the rows then try for as much light as possible up the rows.

To do it at right angles to this causes each row to put the next in its shadow.

Theoretically, yes - but when we grow them at one end of the garden, the only way is not UP - it's across!!

Do you think I will get 3 rows if I grow them lengthwise?

The beds are in the middle of the plot and get sun until late afternoon and then again in the evening.
