spent our first weekend on our new allotment, previous owner left us 4 leeks, 1 cabbage, tons of brussels and when we were clearing some weeds managed to pull out 8 huge parsnips. they have also left us with 3 rows of japanese onions, rhubarb.
we have cleared the bottom half of the plot, dug out 4 trenches ready for spuds and made 2 veg beds 1 ready for carrots and 1 we have planted with our onions. weeded round the japanese ones, we are now starting to stiffen up ! can't wait till next weekend to get the other half sorted.
we now just need to find a shed and go collecting some pallets ready for my compost bins.
will post photos when I can find the camera, and my allotment plans for your comments when finished (keep changing my mind - womans perogative)
A really impressive weekend's work. I hope that your back is ok in the morning. Looking forward to seeing the pics :)
Congrats on the new allotment! Can't wait to see the pics! Sounds like you made an excellent start! That's the best way - make the most of the nice weather! I'm sure you'll find once you get in to the swing of things, you'll soon stop aching!
Good luck!
what a brilliant weekend to start... and what a great welcom pressie all those left over veg... all i got left was a shed which he came back for after 3 years of abandonment.. he nicked my best rake which was donkey's years old and i found some spuds up the top of the plot amongst the thistles.
What a good start you've made already, puts us to shame ;D
Take it easy though, don't want to break your back on the first couple of weekends lol ;)
Can't wait to see your pics, make sure you take plenty! x
forgot to say as well, the man a couple of plots across gave us some of his beetroot to cook and some white kidney beans to grow....
help what do i do with the beans??????
when do I plant them, do I start them off in pots first can't find any info in my books. ??? ??? ???
my hubby is getting very competative now, cause we have been told they hold a plot competition every year and their allotment has won the town one for the last 3 years running.
Now is the ideal time to be starting! I hope that you get a really good first season.
congrats sounds like you have done loads already well done remember the pics when you can.
I also started this weekend on a plot that hasnt been touched for 2 years.
Its very grassy, but not too many weeds.
I have dug out two patches so far to create my beds with 18inch wide grassy paths between them.
I will end up with 6 beds 12foot x 6foot.
Can anyone tell me if I need to sieve out the soil to remove the bits of grass and the broken up roots?

I certainly wouldn't consider sieving that size of area, but if you have the time and you think it warrents it, you try riddling to remove unwanted stuff.

defo remve the roots else they will be back in earnest later in the year. also remove the stones as these will affect the root crops you grow.
