Title: Feeding and mulching raspberries
Post by: coznbob on March 08, 2007, 13:45:42
Sorry if this has already been covered in another thread, but am in need of some advice.

Have cut down all our inherited raspberries, hopefully assuming rightly  that they are an autumn variety! Cut them back right to the ground as adviced by someone in the know.
Now, what is the best thing to feed them with, apart from manure as don't have enough, and when do I mulch them? Do I wait for them to grow a bit more, so I can mulch round them, or will they grow through the mulch?

Sorry if these seem silly questions but whilst I thought I knew what I was doing before I got the plot, now realising vast holes in my knowledge!

I cut back to ground level and mulch pretty much at the same time, the new shoots will grow up through no problems.

I mulch will well rotten manure, two or 3 years old. If not enough to hand give them a general purpose feed and mulch with leaf mould or any organic matter to hand. Later in the year I often thrown grass clippings around them as well to hold more moisture.

Like Jerry says.A good manuring with some well rotted stuff when you have cut the canes down will do the new growth a world of good.

No need to feed them again until the next time you manure after cutting them down............well i dont anyway  :)

i was also wondering about that.

I have all my fruit bushes ( excluding those needing acid soil ) in one 4ft by 10ft bed until i get the fruit cage in and add the beds there.

I was wondering if i should get some hay or straw and cover the bed and around the plants to help keep in moisture and stop weeds

Certainly wont hurt. I would use straw rather than hay though, fewer seeds.

My raspberries are under the black permeable membrane type stuff. Any ideas how to feed them -obviously a liquid feed, but which one?
