Hi, I am beginning to think I should start a seed stashers anonymous group to help people like me and others who have seed collecting addiction.
I don't think I dare publicly admit truthfully how many different varieties of tomato seeds I have (my particular tipple you might say)
I think this is some sort of a disease I suffer from.I have been pondering the question of late, trying to figure it out.
What makes a fairly sane ,mature person collect and hoard such a huge amount of seeds. I could never use all them in three lifetimes.
Is it something in the air that goads me into increasing my stash. It seems to get worse in the Spring and settles down as Winter approaches.
Should I think about putting a ban on seed catalogues, or start a campaign to have them classified as restricted to non gardeners only. They pop through the letter box like drug dealers flounting their wares.I don't stand a chance.
Then there is the net, maybe I can contact my server and put restrictions on what I can click on to like Mums do with their children to avoid porn and such.
Even shopping is dangerous. I go to by bread at Lidl and there they are, racks and racks of seed packets, just waiting for me to stop and look, and if you do, you're done for.
Try buying dog food at the pet mart, guarantee I will come out with carrot seeds too.
Packet of screws from B&Q, parsnips
I need new knickers, but am scared to go to Marks amd Spencers in case they to have started a gardening section and I come home with kohl rabi.
It's no good you saying don't look, cos it's impossible to walk past, and once you stop, that's it .
I am now starting to think I should hide them from the family ,like gin bottles,so I don't have to admit what the real situation is.
So is it just me, please tell me I am not alone...................or is there enough of us to start a group .
XX Jeannine
Yep, I think I could be a member of seed stashers anonymous! My OH just groans when I squeal with excitement at yet another order from a catalogue or an A4A seeds swap! I've only been growing less than a year and I have a (big) shoe box full of seeds (and actually, come to think of it, that's overflowing!). To think I started off with a packet of Tomato Alicante and Chilli Cayenne!!!!
PS. Your post has given me the giggles!
;D
:-[ also guilty.
got ever so slightly carried away at Chelsea in 2003 when T&M sold off their seeds at 25p a packet.
the worst thing is that I still have most of them, unopened :(
just bought some more from a bargain shop in Norwich: 69p each or 5 for £1, so bought £2's worth :-[
it's a compulsion!
A moving picture of where I'm headed, Jeannine. Popped into the garden center on Sunday; £50 later and I've got a fist full of seed packets, potatoes, 200l of compost and some new seed trays. :-[ ;D
It's being on broadband at work that does for me - all those lovely online seed retailers....
:)
bad news Jeannine our local M&S are selling herb/veg seeds in trendy tins ::)
so don't buy any knickers just yet ;)
I also have more tomato varieties than a sane person should have......and I'm running out of places to store all my other seeds
theres more than enough of us to start that group (my new passion is fruit trees, see one buy one think about where to plant it later ::))
see you in therapy /shades x
I'm fairly certain that Biscombe wins on the Tom list but I spent £20 at 25p a packet at Wyvale before Christmas and have about four carrierbags on the wall behind me!
;D
erm...
let me see at last count individual packets - veg seeds 159, flowers 77.
excluding blubs and onion sets which i think is another 350!
call the men in white coats!
I feel better already, but Saddad you were bad to bring up fruit trees,I have a very small back garden with just borders round a paved area,I have huge pots with family apples, family pears, a plum,a peach,a cherry and an apricot, plus 10 large pots with blueberries in and a lone fig. plus I have pear I bought I bought by accident, beautiful cordon job. My poor Pekes don't know where to go potty and the cat thinks the pots are litter trays.
Biscombe I dare you to tell how many tomato varieties, maybe we should do some swapping!! I tell if you will, but it is insane.
If we start a group perhaps we should meet in Kew Gardens ,I don't think they sell anything there.( I'll bring my scissors)
XX Jeannine
Sorry Saddad, you were good it was shaded who brought up the trees ,bad, bad .
XX Jeannine
Have they stiill go them on sale at Netto?
I've got the fruit tree compulsion, Ray's just extending the fruit cage to include the 2 apples, pear, new cherry, plum, peach, nectarine, plus redcurrants and blueberries I've bought this year..I know some of them are awkward but my kids have all grown up ;D
how big is your fruit cage and what have you got in it?
Tescos are selling veg seeds, M&S are selling seeds :o
QuoteFinally got time in my life, inspired by Carol Klein, thought I'd get an allotment...
BUT
There is a one/two year waiting list so does anyone have an allotment that they wish to share?
OR space in their garden for me to grow veg and maybe sone flowers?
I live in East Bristol
(one of many)
Big up Carol Klein ;D
I have five large powder paint tubs overflowing with seeds so definitely one for the club me ;D
I don't know what the world is coming too, soon I will be able to buy my knickers with my order from Dobies!! XX Jeannine
I reckon I have at least 40 different seed varieties. Dont think I will ever need as many as Cambourne 7 - over 150 :o :o :o ;D ;D ;D
I must admit to being an addict too. I find it so amazing that all that potential veg is hidden in a little, dry, maggoty looking blob!
cj :)
39 tomato varieties, just for a start. I'm not going to have space for all of them.
Since i have only really just started, i dont have that many.

I have bought around 6 more packs from Alan Roman, so i would say 25 packs in total.
I too am a seed collector! Wherever I go I have to buy seeds, seeds and more seeds - the same goes for garlic and onion sets.... I am sooooooooo gonna have too many onions this year (didnt grow any last year). In fact I should start buying storing materials.
My seeds now take up 2 huge shoe boxes and a large xmas chocolate tin.
I think I warrent an E.U grant ,but as 'habits' go it is for all the right reasons and benefits
quite a few others in produce shared. Convinced myself, now , where are those catalogues?
!p.s Ryton still have spuds!
Lovely tho isnt it! We cause no harm, other than to our bank accounts. It won't hurt anyone when we are feeding our addiction, in fact, when everything grows, we will be providing healthcare to our families and friends when they partake in the freshly grown produce or flowers. It isn't offensive, unless you are easily offended and those lewd chillis upset you ;). And, when you think about other addictions, our is actually quite cheap to maintain....I fear that is why we all find it so hard to kick the habbit!
just bought some more seeds: Tagetes Minuta :-[
(having read another thread about their mystical powers
destroyng ground elder, bindweed and couch grass :o)
hope they help!
4 new packs arrived today from Alan Romans :-[
But they were very cheap......honest.
cj :)
I think sometimes the forum leads me astray too...just when I think I have all my allotment seeds sorted, I read about a new carrot or somesuch that someone has recommended and that compells me to make another purchase ;D
Then just as I am trying to be good, there is the seed swap parcel to tempt me, although as I put seeds in too technically that doesn't count does it!
Honestly, you are all very, very bad influences on me.... ;D and I am not going to tell how many packets of seeds I have because I am too ashamed to count... :-[ but it is quite a lot... ::)
Go on we dare you, and I promise to count my tomatoes if you do XX Jeannine
Thing is, its the seed buying itself that may be the baddie - we could just organise more seed swaps and sharing the umpteen-thousand seeds in a packet of something that will be more than we will need for a few seasons! Just grabbed a 2006 catalogue - how long would 1200 seeds of a lettuce variety last?
Oh I can beat that lettuce,I buy from one place where they offer a) sample size
b) regular packet c) 1/4 ounce and so on..last time I bought my favourite lettuce which I uses a baby leaves I ought a 28gram packet which I have in front of me now, approx 30,000 seeds, this is the gospel truth
Does anyone need any Simpson Elite similar to a black seeded Simpson. Large ruffled light green leaves, slow to bolt. I am serious. XX Jeannine
Can you beat my father sowing 3 rows of webbs wonderful at once - these had perfect germination, therefore we had 3 rows of excess lettuce to rid on our neighbours, family's work colleagues....
John is working out, with 30,000 seeds , I could eat a full lettuce every for 82 1/2 years before I ran out XX
XX Jeannine
I have many hundreds of packets of seeds. Two full shoeboxes. Its like an obsession.
