Title: Melon droop!
Post by: carolinej on March 06, 2007, 20:19:13
Hello,

on 13th Feb, I planted some melon Earlygold FI. They germinated really quickly, and were doing fine. Now, one of them has gone all droopy. The others are looking a bit yellow. Is it just that they were planted too early, or something else?

Any advice?

Thanks

cj :)

Some of my aubies are looking like that too.  Think they were sown too early.

Some people never listen.    :-[ :-[

Hi Caroline, if this is one of the seeds I sent you, I sowed mine too and they are doing great, I potted them on today into 3 inch pots, mine are in a heated greenhouse with extra light though, and if yours  are yellowing I would think it is the light and they maybe stretching.

That particular melon I have grown for several years, the seed is from Canada , the timing for it is April  for seeding but that is on the West coast where it is warmer than here,I start mine that bit early to compensate.

The company blurb about this particular melon is .

If you have never been able to grow melons before, try this reliable extra early cantaloupe. It makes a 31/2 -4 pound fruit if it gets the growing season in. I grew this one outside last year again starting it 6 weeks earlier than normal, but it was hotter than usual, and I planted through black plastic, usually I do my melons in the greenhouse.

It requires only slightly moist soil to germinate. It is one of the less iffy ones.

Good Luck Jeannine

Jeannine,

this isnt one of yours. It is one I had as a cheap pack of seeds end of last year. The ones you sent me are just popping their heads through and are looking ok. That's what made me think that perhaps the sick seedlings went in too early.

Thanks

Maybe, but mine are just a week or two behind, If they don't make it I can probably spare you a plant a bit later when they are up a lot more.I ca't remember how many I seeded till I go out there.XX Jeannine

Sounds like they have cold and wet feet ease of with the watering.

If I may use one of my terms; keep them  the damp side of dry!

Cor, you are keen!  I won't start any squashes until the end of the month...have enough competition with all the toms, chillis and aubs.  The squash are just to tender and fussy for me to bother with yet.
