Title: What tomato seed have you started ?
Post by: Chris Graham on March 05, 2007, 22:16:45
Well, i only have a 6x6 greenhouse but have around 21 tomato plants growing.

I hope at a push i may be able to get 12 into it and the rest dotted around the garden  ;)

This tomato growing is really addictive (not to mention the collection of black buckets).

Here is my list (so far ;) )  :

Marmande x 2
Sungold x 5
Alicante x 2
San Marzano 2 x 2
Ferline x 2
Tigerella x 1
Gardeners Delight x 4
Garten Perle x 3

also:
Aubergine Mini Bambino x 4

Sown ten each of sweet million, gardeners delight, tamina, and shirley, some for the greenhouse, and some for the garden and up at the plot. Some have just today germinated, but not all yet.
Will probably, as usual, share any excess with the rest of the family for their gardens/greenhouses, as no one else seems to grow from seed but would rather buy ready grown plants.

Just the ones for the greenhouse so far, Brandywine, Cuore di Bue, Nebraska Wedding and Cherokee Purple. The outdoor ones are going in in about a weeks time.

Yes, agree with Larkspur: just the GH ones; hold fire with the outdoor ones - they'll grow very quickly. I've got Shirley (my GH mainstay), plus a few Gardener's Delight, Ildi & Harbinger. The rest get sown early April. (Wedding anniversary on the 2nd, so I use that to remind me!)

Oh well, perhaps I was a bit premature. Not to worry though, as I said, I have only sown 10 of each, so have plenty left if they get too big before I can plant them out.

Our Wedding Ann. is on the 28th of March, so that too could be a guideline.

So far:
12 each of Gardener's Delight, Marmande and Tigerella, sowed just yesterday! Maybe a bit early but they always seem to take a while to get going, and I am definitely very impatient :)

Why I sow early: I get to the point where I can't wait anymore and plant tomato seeds. Makes me feel like I'm doing something while it's cold n rainy outside!  :) I am resisting seeding anything else tho because it all grows fast and then I have little pots all over the house. That the cats like to knock over. :P
I have in: white princess, black krim, aurora, gardeners delight, a pink one I can't remember the name of, and an orange type. 36 plants in all, will dispense extras to others who can't be bothered to plant from seed. Got a lot from the Dulwich potato day at the end of Jan.

I sow ones that have different maturity dates as I am sure most do, the Tumbler, although not one of my favourites is the fastest one I know of and holds me till the first of the others is ready. Sungold goes on forever and I can usually keep a few plants growing in the'at home greenhouse till late November. XX Jeannine

Wrong!!  Stephan & a couple of others are the experts.

I do everything in slow time - consistent with my age. And I'm quite happy to harvest Tomatoes from early July until mid-October/mid-November.

My reason for sowing late is simply this;

If I sowed early I would have no where to plant them  because my greenhouse space is taken up with others things waiting to be planted outdoors.

So it is simply;  needs must.

Plus late sowing give me fresh tomatoes for Xmas when they are expensive in the shops!

being as Ive just aquired another greenhouse I have started some toms early. Of course Ive gotta grow shirley but then they are nice eh!. I'm also growing some Gigante LIscio that I got from Real Seeds. Will let you know how thy go. I must say that the seeds sewn so far from them have had a good germination rate.

Hi Shirlton, you know credit due and all that......I have to agree with you, I have noticed in the past couple of weeks the germination rate is very good,if fact I don't think anything I have sown from them so far has missed one seed, I record how many I sow and they have been exceptional.  I have sown  several differnt squash, 3  tomatoes,  and  peppers and not one miss.Well Done Real Seeds X Jeannine

Must be around 300 and probably 20+ varieties.

I like to have some ready for when the keen `growers but not sowers` want to buy.

I`m a bit like Tee Gee when it comes to ones for me though-all the space in two houses and a polytunnel gets taken up with plants for sale-not only toms but peppers, cus, aubies and melons etc.

One day I  will come to my senses cos I seldom do much more than make £200-300 a year profit but it funds my habit.

Wrong!!  Stephan & a couple of others are the experts.

Tim-how kind of you. I would not call myself an expert grower by any means-I might have grown and tasted a few more varieties than a few other members though.

And the reason you sow/plant a bit later than some folk is due to;

1-With middle age comes wisdom

2-The atmosphere is thin at 650ft.
