My son has 2 guinea pigs which we were told are both males. :-\ Noticed over the last couple of days that the smallest of the two has clapped weight on. It looks like hes a she. Any tips or anyone know any decent websites?Tomorrow i will seperate them and make her a nest box.
The best website is rabbits united. tehy do cover pigs as well
Oh dear! I bought a rabbit and pig once from a pet shop... both supposed to be girls but the rabbit turned out to be a boy! Good job i didnt have a female too!
We now have 2 girls - they are brilliant - Squeaky and Posie.
Good luck with them - remember baby pigs can breed v v early too so will need sexing after a couple of weeks or so!
Thanks olive i've just been to library and got some old books. Our expectant one is pip unisex i suppose. Daxter is the lucky father. My lad is really excited making a nestbox[advertising please, close advertising] out of a shoebos as we speak.
Be prepared for a shock you will look in their one day and see some tiny replicas munching away, they seem to pop out as mini adults, running around, eyes open etc it is quite remarkable the first time you see them XX Jeannine
Little lad keeps checking every 10 mins or so, :) i'm busy seeing if my Toms have germinated ;D
Pips a mum come home fom work yesterday to discover loads of squeking shes had 2 babies. Your right Jeanine it is amazing they are just like little minitures fully furred and eyes open. I'll take some pics.
Oh, you have made my day, it is remarkable how grown up they look but in minature, enjoy them XX Jeannine
If any of the babies are male they need to be seperated at 3 weeks.
A good web site is pimms guinea pig., Just google it and it should come up.
We brought 2 girls last year and 2 became 4 ,lucky they were both females and we kep't them both.
Debby
Congratulations on your new additions.
The same thing happened to me when I was about 18, (bit old for guinea pigs I suppose). The female had two babies born on Mother's Day which was lovely. They were scarily like minatures of both parents, in colour / sex.
When they were old enough we put 'boys' on one side of a wire run, and 'girls' on the other. There was a 1' high partition in the middle. Obviously male piggy hormones must be very powerful, as both boys got into the girls side. Needless to say we had loads more babies, but must something must have gone wrong, maybe due to a virus or too much interbreading, and we lost them all quite shortly after.
congrats on your growing family!
I love guinea pigs and had two when I was younger: Casey (black and tan) and Sixpence (white and gingery face, called Sixpence because his mum was Tuppence)
they're such little characters â€" mine used to start squeaking as soon as they heard the fridge door open ;D
(love the Egg banking TV adverts ;D ;D)
