Found this helpful for me. Quote from a prevoius post by Gavin.

Or are you looking for an image linked to you as a contributor - an avatar which always appears under your name.

Step 1 - click on your Profile button.  A page will open, and half-way down you'll see Personalised Picture.  You have two options -

2.1  Choose one from the list offered?

2.2  Or click the tick box beside "I have my own pic", and enter the URL/address of your chosen image at "http://   "  (see 1.2 above for accurately copying the address!) - this could be on your own web-site, or A N Other.

2.3  What sort of picture?

First the curmudgeonly bit - please remember that some A4A users have much older and slower computers?  The smaller and faster the image, the less frustrating their experience!

Size -
100 x 100 px (better still 80 x 80 px)
Larger files are automatically resized - but remember us with rubber band power!

Format -
You can use a static ".gif"  (small file, neat and quick)
or an animated ".gif"  (bigger, fancier, and slower)
or a ".jpg" file  (good for avatars which are photos)
