Title: Thank God it's Friday!
Post by: Mrs Ava on May 07, 2004, 12:48:57
What a very lovely morning!  The sun is shining in Essex and the air is warm, so by 8.50am I was down on the plot for a serious mornings work.  Job number one, weed the pea patch - all weeds, didn't look like the pigeons had left any peas, however, after an hour of hand weeding, am rather chuffed as the peas that have been munched have come back thicker and there are only 2 small bald patches in my rows, so sowed some more to fill in the gaps.  Made sure the net is down super tight this time!  Next weeded around my bean poles and planted some beans - Ina's ones - Ina, I can't remember what they are called, so I have named them Ina Beans!  Can you refresh my memory please  ;D.  Then weeded around my kohl rabi and they are all bulbing up lovely.  I love 4 plants in all during transplanting, so I filled the gaps today with some lettuces that were in modules, then along my beetroots and parsnips.  Now the snips have come up like cress!  I sowed extra taking heed of what everyone said about them being buggers to germinate, and there they are in their hundreds.  At some point I have to be brave and thin them.  A job for next weekend I think.  Carrots are thin  :-\ but lettuce, turnips and swedes have all germinated thickly and again, going to have to do some thining!  All in all the plot is begining to look packed!  My new plot still has a small patch needing to be dug, so that will be next week, over there will be my corns, squash and sunflowers, plus anything else I don't have room for on my numero uno plot.  Oh, and Old Jack came over to say cheerio and to give me a pressy of a 4 pronged cultivator rake like tool - I must remember to take some disinfectant up to the plot as he has white rot on his patch and can't grow onions.  Kind tho huh!  Now, I can't use a hoe, so I hoping I will be able to use this instead!!  ;D  ooooooooo and by the way, bloody love my shed I do!  ;D

wow - what a wonderful morning! Lucky you EJ. (jealous cos I'm stuck in the office and I so want to be out sowing, planting, weeding, etc!)

Your plot sure sounds like it's going to be productive.

With the snips - can you not wait until they are tiny snips before thinning and then eat them (maybe fried in a little butter and then drizzled with honey - mmmm). I think you must have all my parsnips too - sowed a whole packet - got two things growing. Can't even be sure they are snips.  :'(

Most impressed I am. (where are the photos?!)

Hi Aqui - I spent three hours on the plots yesterday - but didn't get anywhere near as far as you!

The pre-germination of the parsnips was a triumph using the damp kitchen roll and margarine tub technique - loads more germinated than I needed!  They were transplanted into rootrainers and I planted them out yesterday.  As our soil is very stoney I took the advice of fellow plotholders and made a big hole with a dibber which I filled with potting compost and planted into that.  It remains to be seen if all this effort will produce anything edible - I'll let you know is six months time!

Hoed the weeds amongst the shallots and garlic.  Tried to miss the shallots and garlic themselves - with only moderate success!

The grass has grown enormously and I don't know how to keep on top of it......it is the thing that depresses me as I can't find a machine that I can manage that has the power to get through it.

However, did get to tackle some digging on No 2 plot and cleared a space for one of the watermelon - started tackling a second patch, too, but ran out of time to get too far.

Isn't gardening just the best thing!   :D
AC

Bl**dy freezing and wet today so I suppose I better do some cleaning.....

Well lucky you lot, we had rain most of the weekend so not a great deal was done.

A bit of weding in the onion/shallot patch.

A bit of transplanting in the greenhouse, everything seems to be growing out of their pots at the moment and seem to be doing well....very wary about actually planting out in case they don't do as well as they have been.

My tattie plot which looked great before the rain has levelled itself..my spare earth from the trenches for earthing up has been flattened by the rain ??? ???

Going to build the supports for the beans this week if the weather picks up.

But if it carries on like this then even more decorating will get done.  We are in the process of changing the colour scheme throughout the house so the Woof household is very busy at the moment.....but like I always say......

Busy bees are happy bees......................

Take care all
