I am about to re-pot some of my seedlings, do chilli seedlings root from the stem like tomatos as I am wondering whether I can bury the stems?
???
No they do not root from the stems like tomatoes.
So far as I know all seedlings should, when pricked out, be sunk in the compost up to the cotyledon leaves (seed leaves)
Now someone is going to give me an exception/s ;D

Are these very lanky, Sparks?
they are about 1" tall to the leaves and some seem quite lanky compared to others
OK, no harm in giving it a go....be v. careful that the new compost has been watered & well drained before you do. And do you have more seeds to sow as a back-up? If so, you could leave them until, say, end March/beginning of April to start again. They'll catch up. Have faith!
I was under the impression the chillies were one of the few like tomatoes where you can plant deeper,I had read this recently on a chili site I think, And also there was a posting here in the last week or two I think it was DTW who also mentioned it is OK, Sorry can't offer you more specifics but if I find the chili site I will post it.XX Jeannine
Here is a good chilli site http://www.chillisgalore.co.uk/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=b8b5b2ed86e990340ef3b75234f3c3f7 (http://www.chillisgalore.co.uk/phpBB2/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=b8b5b2ed86e990340ef3b75234f3c3f7)
G e o.. :)
http://chillisgalore.co.uk/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1847&highlight=rooting+stem using the forum above I have found alot of people seem to do this. Thanks for the advice everyone. I will try this with the more leggy seedlings. I have others so if it doesn't work it is not a disaster. ;D
They do root from the lower part of the stem, I repot mine about halfway up the stem.
This also helps them stay upright.
One inch doesn't sound that leggy.
the ones that i am concerned about are more than 1 inch. My other half was posting for me so I could try and get an answer whilst I was out :) They are about 2-3 inches. I will try replanting the leggy ones half way up the stem. Hopefully that will sort it
