Title: Potato leaf and regular leaf tomato seed saving
Post by: Biscombe on March 01, 2007, 21:21:40
I´m planning to save as many tomato seeds as I can this year. I have a few potato leaf varieties, should I plant these separately? heard that potato leaf varieties cross, but regular don´t. Any of you got first hand experience?

Quoting from a  heritage seed saving instruction book.... Even though tomatoes are self pollinating some crossing between varieties may occur. Insects can cause cross pollination between different varieties of the same type of pollinating vegatable .Varieties should be seperated by 20-150 feet. The old fashioned potato leaf varieties which have a flower that is more open to insects should be seperated by the 150 feet. There is a range of distances given, this is because your local situation can change from year to year, larger distances are needed if there is an abundance of insects . Hope this helps XX Jeannine
