:)
in a moment of madness i bought a peach tree, which was too big for the greenhouse, so planted it on the allotment ::)
its growing fantastically (is that a real word?) well :)but...got peach leaf curl last year because its not covered over, and the gales keep blowing the fleece off.
its full of buds, so my question is...has anyone built a structure to protect a peach tree from all the elements???
has anyone successfully grown a peach tree outside which has fruited?
sorry for rambling on ;D ::) hope someone can help / shades x
Yes, My dad grows them outside down in devon, they are fan trained on a south facing wall in a very sheltered walled garden. He has a small pitched roof attached to the wall over them that gets the worst of the weather of them and hangs a curtain of fleece if needed.
Also on my allotment site in Sussex a chap grows them with some succes, these are in a fuit cage and he simply pegs fleece over them and covers the fleece with netting to stop it flogging about so much as he is in an exposed spot on the top of a hill.

My aunt in Norwich has one in her garden (kind of tree-shaped & doesn't look very trained) - she has bumper crops every year. It's pretty sheltered (in a Victorian terrace back garden) but gets no special treatment.
we went mad and bought one, I've got a fleece balnket over it, pegged to the lower branches with proper pegs..I know it needs babying but it's in the warmest part of our allotment and I'll give anything a go.. ;D
Lost mine to Leaf Curl but am seriously thinking about trying again..
;D
:)
thanks for your replies everyone,
much appreciated / shades x
I have a nectarine in a large pot, I'm at a bit of a loss what to do with it! :-\
I've run out of room at home, and think my plot is too blustry to suit it; so in its pot it stays a the moment, I'll see if it flowers this spring.....
It can come and live with my Fig against that big wall if it wants Deb!
;D

You never know your luck, perhaps if I get a second plot it will have a nice warm wall......(dream.... ;D) Wonder if OH is any good at making orangeries....? ;)
no chance up here, unless someone can tell me otherwise?
I expect it will be a bit chilly and damp for it up there. Is there a demand for deep fried peaches ;D

Had one in a pot in the Polytunnel as a kid (I grew up North of Inverness) - I think we had a crop of 3 one year and 4 or 5 the next, although at least one had an earywig inside!
We rented a house that backed onto the Blackwall Tunnel approach road and at the end of the garden was a massive peach tree. For the two years that we were there it flowered, got leaf curl and produced masses of fruit - tried one but never enjoyed that much pollution with my peaches!

only tinned ones ;D
Hi I bought a perigrine peach just last year it had wintered in a poly tunnel just before it came to me.I have it in a very large pot fairly close to my house in East Yorkshire,I kept it in the greenhouse when I first got it then put it out in March.I got about 15 peaches on it and they were super.I have not done anything special to it,it is still outside in it 's pot and it has a few shoots on, no curl. I read last week that there is now a peach that is completely resistant to Peach Leaf curl and was thinking of buying a second one,XX Jeannie
Yes but what does it taste like????
Some things are too good to be true...
:-\
Oops the taste, it was great, if I was to complain I would say the fruit were a bit small, but having been used to home grown peaches for many years in BC, I was only interested in the taste as I felt shop ones were like bullets and had given up on them The flesh is paler than a usual peach but going out and finding one ready to eat was a big treat. We had the same feeling about the cherries too,we had missed those. My trees were very yound last year so we were thrilledXX Jeannine
:)
Hi Jeannine,
a fellow lottie holder from Canada advised me to plant my peach tree outside, because he grew them on his farm at home,
you have confirmed for me it can be done,
thanks /shades x
Planting outside in Canada can be a bonus . If he was in BC or thereabouts he would have been fine, further North it could be tricky I lived right there and I grew nectarines and apricots too. I hesitated a long time before I took the plunge here, but my one was fine through the winter,it is close to the house though, and the dreaded curl may get it yet but I am expecting that Good Luck, please let me know how you do and what you get. XX Jeannine
:)
bringing this up for flossie, so she can click on fleece ::)
will keep in touch Jeannine :) / shades x
Thank you - clicking accomplished
We have a full-standard peach tree on our lawn that is 18ft tall and about 10 years old. It gives 50-100 fruit each year that is between 5 and 10kg. No disease.
My Perigine is just starting to show buds, and my apricot is in full bloom,I am keeping my fingers crossed ,go away peach curl. XX Jeannine
My nectarine is now smothered in little fruits, but I've just picked off a few leaves that were twisted red and distorted, presumably peach leaf curl?
Can I get away with not spraying and just picking off the odd leaves do you think? :-\
Mp peach tree is now loaded with baby fruit. it has been outside all year ,uncovered. We brought apricot in but left the peach out without fleece. I had none and didn't have time ot get any. XX Jeannine
Wife spotted an apricot tree at the GC which claimed to survive outdoors in the UK. Has now survived 3 weeks but this weather is hardly testing so fingers crossed.
Barnowl. we lost the apricot but the peach left outside was fine. We bought them both together year before last late in season, the first year we had them really was last year, peach got fruit no problem ,apricot got foliage, this year it started to get growth and snuffed it I think, peach on the other hand is doing very well. We pulled the one into the dining room as it was the first to blossom, then the other one did a few days later and we had no room so we had no choice but to leave it out. Strange eh!! XX Jeannine
