Title: Sweet Pea seeds
Post by: Jitterbug on February 28, 2007, 20:10:33
Is anyone out there going to be platning out sweet pea seeds tomorrow - I seem to remember 1 March is St George's day and the most ideal day to plant them - but the packet says April in open ground??

Oooh, now there's a coincidence. I have been meaning to plant my Sweet Peas in February, but didnt get round to it. I filled a lot of loo rolls with compost today, and then read that it was best to soak the seed overnight. So they are soaking ready to plant in the morning.

One problem, March 1st is St davids day, patron saint of Wales, not St George. So, if March 1st is good, then I'm OK. If St George's Day is good, then I'm not OK. By the way, anyone know when ST George's Day is?

Caroline

You are most probably right about St David - I knew it was one of the St's   ;D  ;D  The only problem is that I already have a ton planted in root trainers and really wanted to plant them into the open ground to save space.

April 23rd isn't it for St. George - Shakespeare's birthday.

My seed packet says Jan-Feb for glasshouse sowings, or Mar-Apr direct in growing site or in pots. I usually do some in October and some about now.

APRIL 23rd IS ST GEORGES DAY.
Sorry to be shouting, but i am an Englishman, and very patriotic.
It is on a Monday this year, therefore it should be an English Public Holiday.

Yes 1st March
( St. Davids Day)
is the start for me ( being Welsh I remember it to start my sowing) but it does work for me.

I was hoping to sow mine this week, was going to sow into open ground as I usually do. Don't know though, think it's going to pee down all week...metcheck!
But I'm in the south, maybe I can because it's a bit milder?

It's always better to give sweetpeas a head start in pots under cover. Direct sowing is fine if you're stuck for space.
I never bother chitting the seed.
