Title: Hello from a newbie
Post by: chappy on February 27, 2007, 20:41:43
Hi all,

Good to find a place where I can talk to like minded folk.  I may not have an allotment but am having a go at producing some of my own fruit and veg.  I did grow a few tomatoes and courgettes in conatiners last year ok.  And got a few strawberries from my strawberry pot.  And also grew most of the herbs I like.  but looking to push on this year.

Only a small plot I've got in the back graden, which I'm splitting into 4 140cm x 100cm beds.  Then on my south facing wall I want some fruit bushes or dwarf espaliered trees.  I'll also keep the containers for tomatoes and others that can go in there.

I have been trying to decide how to divide up the garden into usable entertaining space and usable growing space and unfirtunately this means that some of my growing area will be in partial shade on the north side of my garden.  But hoping I can get away with it by planting the right things along that fence.

I've just finished planting my first seeds of the year Chives and Basil and popped them in my propogator, so look forward to seeing them come through.

Here's wishing everyone a happy spring.

Regards,

Ian (Chappy).

Hiya chappy & welcome!  There are lots of peeps on here who also grow veggies in tubs, if you do a search on container gardening you'll find several fairly recent threads.  We're newbies to gardening and have taken on an allotment  ;D and are enjoying it hugely so far (and we've only put down paths!)  Good luck for the coming season!

us too we have been growing in tubs for the last three years and took the plunge to get a plot in mid Jan.  Absolutely love it and all we have done is clear weeds and dig like mad things whenever its dry to get it all done in time to plant! got about 4m x 5m left to turn over then rake the lots and think we are good to go :D OH knocked up a lovely couple of compost bins and got the whole family looking out for 'useful' bits and bobs all over the place.  Constantly looking at objects thinking "now what could we use that for??? ::)" grape boxes are now mini propagators all over the house  :o

lots of cheeky chappies and chappesses here, so you'll soon feel at home ;) and some of us grow stuff in our gardens in free black buckets too, tho others have to buy theirs ::)

If you need any seeds, give a shout in Swap Shop.

Cheers, Lishka

I may well do that.  I was rather shrewd late last year and got loads of seeds as they were being sold off at the end of summer, so got most of what I want.  But I've got so many seeds for such a small plot they may have plenty to give away/swap, even though they should be viable for another year.

btw I'll be sure to take some photos of my garden so you can all see what I have and then hopefully what it will turn into. :)

That's the truth. My lottie is already looking too small and I've only just cleared the first bed!  ;)
Pre-lottie I grew spuds in a long rectangular thing my OH made from pallets, sweetcorn and toms in pots. I had a little patch for strawberries and salad & greens, whatever I fancied having a bash at growing went in. not all successful as I overshaded lots of stuff, but you learn as you go.
Get on the waiting list for a lottie plot near you now, you'll be planning for next year!!
Happy growing. ;D
