Title: lovley waste of time
Post by: cambourne7 on February 26, 2007, 18:35:17
Hi Guys,

My last day off for a while, i toddled down to the plot and its just 2 wet to actualy do anything!

So i have cut some wood to but a floor on my shed and just need one last bit to hammer it all down.

Then i got the paint out and used some freecycle wood exterior paint to paint the inside of my grotty shed a yummy blue green called oregano. I have enough paint to do the roof which needs a good clean from cob webs first :-)

Next weekend i plan to paint the outside of the shed which should make it last a little longer.

I also managed to get the guttering up for one of my 2 water buts but i dont think that its out far enough so i need to look at it again when i am warmer :-)

I am a little disapointed i did not get any further with my beds as 2 still need to be dug over and these 2 and another one need filling :-(

I also need to get more wood chips down to supress the weeds.

Has anyone else got anything done on there plots today??

I had a day off today and spent a couple hours down at the plot. Feeling a bit weary and fragile (you know, woman stuff) but it was lovely sitting in the sunshine drinking hot chocolate. :D Planted my rose bush in a random spot and chopped a bit more bramble. I nearly have a path! I've decided to go out every day this week, even if just for a half hour, just to get things under control. When planting the rose I also decided to have no plan! Whoohoo! Basically, because I'm digging as I go there's little consideration for what will grow where. So I planted the rose in the next available spot. Whatever can be planted out next will get whatever area I dig next. :) So at last I have a non-plan plan!

I really need to dig up some bramble at the top of the plot and then level off that spot for the shed. A good use for some of that pile o' couch grass soil I think.

While planting the rose I also pondered just how clay-y my soil is. I could make a bowl or pot out of this stuff, honestly. But it was fun.

Tina.

I was just thinking about the clay on my plot and mentioned today to someone that I should make it into a pot and pop it in my kiln, and then I read a commemt about the same thing, isn't life funny. Do you actually make pots by the way?? XX Jeannine

hehe

Glad to see other people had nice days on there plot.

I have to say that i feel a little fragile after the weekend ( university reunition and very cheap drinks at student union bar :-) )

So 600 mile trip get home and put kettle on to find i had no milk !!

Oh well i had a nice time and bagged a hotel shower cap ( ideal mini greenhouse for pots )

I cant wait for next weekend i hope to get a friend with a trailer to bring some stuff to my plot which includes sheets of polystirene to help insolate my shed, the rigid plastic sheeting, 4 tier greenhouse ( so i can start getting my seedlings started, a box of pots, potted plants in the back garden including boysenberry a couple of apple trees phew!

I am hoping that he can take some bagged soil back with him to my place to help make my camomile lawn :-)

Just got out of the shower having realised i have paint everywhere including the tear duct of an eye  :-X

Spent 3 hours at the lottie today. I built another raised bed. Four down, six to go!. This meant that I could extend the woodchip path up a bit further. I also did a bit of digging. It doesnt look like I did a lot though :-\ I cant wait till all the beds are in.

I actually met someone on the lottie today who knew what a raised bed was. He'd seen it on the Carol Klein thing on TV. Everyone else thinks I am mad, so I really want to get good crops this year.

Looks like rain for the rest of the week, so that will be it for a while. Still, lots to do in the conservatory. Loads of seeds are through and need potting up.

I spent most of the day at the plot. The council have given us a big pile of compost so have putting this around the fruit bushes.

I put in sweetpeas sown at home a few weeks ago and also peas started at home - not sure whether they will survive. I have put glass one side of the peas, just remembered I forgot to use some sort of slug deterrent.

Leeks, first of the purple sprouting, Brussels and parsnip harvested. weeded my sweet Williams

Well, going to bring some stuff down to the plot on the bike today. Very wet so might not do much more than that.

Jeannine, I don't make pots but have 3 friends who are ceramicists. They're always saying how much clay costs so maybe I could bag it and sell it to them! ;D

they can have some of my clay as well :-)

In the last lot of warm weather last year i made a shape and left it to dry out and it kind of worked.

where the water has collected in to a lake next to our raised beds there's enough clay to make bricks to build a house.. today doesn't help, I'm all achy today, arthritis playing up so I'm sitting here worrying about the newly planted nectarine..still, it's getting watered in  :)

Tina, looks like your plot is just up the road from mine (I'm just up from New Eltham station), and at home we have a growing collection of clay animals made by my eldest daughter from clay she's dug out of the allotment! Mind you, at the moment the clay's hidden beneath several inches of water >:( >:(

Cheers,
Rob ;)

Went to lottie, cleared one bed - Couch grass free and ready for planting!! ;D Started clearing a patch for the masses of strawberry plants I uncovered under the couch grass and also cleared away a load of bramble. Started sorting out the compost heap, and popped cloches on my rhubarb. The more I clear away, the more treasures I find. So pleased about the strawbs! Yum yum. x
