Title: Update - Been a while
Post by: sandersj89 on February 26, 2007, 17:23:16
It seems a while since I have managed to get to the board, apologies for that. Things have been a little busy of late what with a reorg at work and attempting to move house. (Not sure which is more stressfull, actually I do and it is trying to sell and buy a house!!!!)

And the house move will be of more interest to all here if it come off as I am trying to buy a house that has just over an acre of garden.

The garden was in fact a commercial nursery until the storms of 1987 when the glass houses were all destroyed by the gales. Since then the owner removed the broken glass and timbers but has left the brick footings and let the whole area revert to brambles and ahs trees, i.e. a complete mess of impenetrable jungle over approx half the space.

The other half is simply grass with a few shrubs dotted around.

In it's days of a commercial nursery they grew veg for the local town and used the glass houses, approx a third of an acre under glass, for tomatos, flowers and ornamentals.

The house also needs a fair bit of work and is smaller than our current place but lends itself to extension though we first have to do mundane things like fit gutters to it and paint the window frames that have not seen a paint brush in 20 years! Oh and succeed in buy the place as well!

If it come of though the space has huge potential and there are plans for a poly tunnel and large veg garden at home which will mean me releasing the allotments over the next few years. Having the veg at home will make life easier though and the whole site has piped water all over it with stand pipes but it is on a water meter!

The main part of the garden will also take a fair bit of work to build up the plant stock and will take a few years with some landscaping thrown in.

I also have plans for a small fruit orchard with a selection of plums, cherries, apples and pears.

So all in all an exciting time if it comes off. At the moment it is just very stressful!!!

Jerry

Oooh Jerry, lovely to see you posting on here again, I have been wondering what you were up to, and more importantly that you were alright as you hadn't updated your blog either, so am really glad to see this post! :)

Your new house and garden (touch wood) sound wonderful - just what my OH would love to get his teeth into too, I hope it all goes through for you, one of the most stressful things you can do buying and selling isn't it?

We will be looking forward to hearing all about it, do keep us posted now you have visited us again. ;)

T.

Phewie, so good to see you posting again Jerry, it sure has been a while!  You have been missed!

The house sounds fab - a real challenge.  And the garden sounds amazing.  A blank canvas.  Plus the luxury of fruit and veg in your own garden, and a polytunnel.  I'm sure I'm not alone in saying, can't wait to see the photos!
;D

Nice to see you back here Jerry, I too was wondering where you'd gone. The property sounds absolutely ideal, very envious here, well done and I bet you're going to be very busy now. I'm sure all the stress of buying/selling will be well worth it. Hope you'll find time to visit and post photos so we can see how you're progressing :)

Great to see you back, Jerry.  Fingers, thumbs and everything else crossed for the house sale and purchase to go through OK.  Sounds like a wonderful opportunity if it all works to plan.  Best of luck!  And keep us updated with progress!

Thanks guys, and apologies again for not getting back on line. Life gets in the way at times!

But yes, it is very exciting but equally stressfull. If it comes off the space will be fantastic but lots of work to knock into shape and then there is the work on the house to get it right and extended. The money is scary!

The move as the crow flies is only just over a mile but it is a three mile drive to get to the property, the last quarter being down a private road that is completely pot hole ridden so I can wave bye bye to ever having a clean car in the winter. But as a consequence it is very very quiet.

I am currently in West Sussex and moving further west but will end up in East Sussex..... ??? ??? ??? This does mean a change in schools for the kids but it is a good school.

Nice to see lots of old faces still here, I am a bit behind in the greenhouse so hope to catch up over the next few weeks. (Could be interesting trying to move plants later in the years!!!!!!)

My two plots though are pretty much under control and still feeding us well.

Only trouble now though is my broad band is playing up at home some no access from there at the moment, BT are hopeless!!!!!

All sounds wonderful Jerry, just what I'd like to keep me busy in my retirement.  Good luck & fingers crossed for you - moving must be THE most stressful thing we willingly subject ourselves to.

I've just connected up at home with Waitrose, although I mostly post from the office (where I am now). The kit arrived on time and set up went fairly smoothly. Have to use them for a while before I could actually recommend. I think any profits go to Macmillan nurses.
