I am ashamed to say that I have not visited Cornwall since 1981 :-[
But we are thinking of putting that right this year and having a weeks Summer holiday there.
We plan to stay in maybe three or four places and have a good look around.
I know that Cornwall often gets mentioned here and would like to pick at your brains and allow you to throw lots of suggestions to me of places that I should visit.
I apprecaite all of the help and suggestions that you can offer.
We are also considering a visit to Jamie Olivers place fifteen at Cornwall.
Does anyone know of a good hotel near there that we can stay overnight in too?
Many thanks in advance xxxx
Bude has always been my love.
Oh Tim and i thought it was me ;) :-*
wow, you've been away too long, we go every year and have done since we got married, 35 years this year.
.st ives gets my vote, we're going there in august, bude is quite a not touristy place, st austell, beautiful coastline, mind you, you're hard pressed to find anything else..
don't know where jamie's place is, could be watergate bay, again, beautiful place..kynance cove, wild , bedruthan steps, amazing, perranporth, bit more touristy, newquay, definitely touristy, mevagissey, lovely
no doubt there'll be other lovely places people will say and some lucky b***ers live there
have a wonderful time ;D
Oh thankyou,thankyou. A brilliant start,please keep them coming :-*
Yes Jamies place is Watergate Bay, there is one hotel within yards(the watergate bay hotel) but i wanted to know of any other nearby options as i do like to have a choice :)
we stayed in a motor home and the hotel looked brilliant, but there were 10 of us and we wanted cheap ;D
We are going to stay in Cornwall in May specifically to visit the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Helligon. I've never been before so I am reading this topic with interest. I am very sure we wont be dissapointed. ;)
You lucky thing, we went to cornwall for several years running when the step children were younger and loved it.
One of our favourite places was Looe, although a small place in itself, it's near to lots of other places so makes for a good base camp. We also found one of our most favouritest restaurants there, it was a slow food restaurant, near the beach, owned and run by a zimbabwean couple. Superb food and lovely relaxed atmosphere, i'd very highly recommend it if only i could remember the name. I'm sure it began with an m...
(just googled it, and it was called mawgans) x
Definitely visit the Eden Project, and we loved Sennen Cove/Whitesand Bay. We stayed at Perranporth which was nice. The Camel Trail is fun to cycle along and Padstow is a great little town to visit, a bit busy but fun to look around. :)
yes eden project is very nice but beware the car parks are a feeding ground for muppets, we got back to our VW Camper to find most iof the doors open and stuff missing. only take what u can carry with u and show ur boot is empty if u can.
Cornwall is a most lovely place
There`s loads of lovely places to visit in Cornwall! When we visit we always stay here, it`s lovely :) www.self-catering-ruthern.co.uk
For a very different landscape do visit the very far west. The coast (Cape Cornwall and around) is beautifull but it is the flat, windswept inland area that is unlikeanywhere else in England. Oh and yes the Lost Gardens are superb but there are a lot of good gardens in Cornwall. :)
Shame ain't it when you can't afford a proper holiday
No only joking ;D I would go there just to see the lost gardens. When you are there look in the local papers to see if they have an open gardens scheme in any of the villages. You will meet a load of dedicated gardeners to swap ideas with.
If you really want to eat and the local food, Rick Steins place looks good.
Just to highjack your thread. If any of you are coming to the Isle of Wight for a proper holiday come over on the May bank holiday, there is a good garden show going on.
Bedruthan Steps is a wonderful beach, wild and rocky, but not good for swimmimg. Lots of steps up and down to it. Trebarwith Strand gets our vote as the best place in Cornwall, g ood beach, caves and rock-pools, not to busy, good pub.
We went to look at 15, but could not afford to eat there, £50 for lunch!!!. There is a good surfers bar and restaurant behind the beach at Watergate.
Each to their own, but we hated Padstow and St Ives, soooo many people. I can remember when Iused to Nanny and we went to Cornwall in the 1970's, it was much quieter. Very good campsite at Morgan Porth, called Magic Cove, and it was magic ;) ;)

rick steins prices are quite expensive, and if we all come to the IOW, are we all stopping with you, Ace, you shouldn't've asked !!
hi honeybee
we go to cornwall annually and stay at a place called Mother Iveys Bay....just west of Padstow....we usually go in a gang of 21 - 10 adults and 11 children, in a mixture of caravans and statics...luvvvvery secluded place with private beach and great walks....and peace and quiet, red wine, guiness, bar b's etc etc etc.
Cornwall so beautiful, we love going there camping with kids and escaping for weekends. Definately do Eden, it's fantastic. Also Mevagissey and Bodmin -Daphne Du Maurier trail. I don't think there is anywhere in Cornwall I dislike, although I outgrew Newquay quite a while ago, I loved it in my yoof! Try www.cornwalltouristboard.co.uk for more inspiration.
Hi I'd recommend Heligan and Eden - both stunning in their own way, depending on when you come they will be busy to very busy.
There are many national trust and private gardens, Trebah, on the Helford River and Trevarno, close to Helston (both private) are free to RHS members.
Most of the gardens in Penwith (far west Cornwall) are known for their Spring plants - the camelias and magnolias have been out for ages now, so altho visiting in summer is lovely, you see them at their best now - May. In fact some gardens close to Penzance have opened early because the plants are that much earlier to flower this year.
I hope you have a good visit
Alison (I live near to Penzance and work in Falmouth).

Havn't really got the room, but I know a place that has, loads of famous people have used it.

If you're in west Cornwall, try to get to the Minack Theatre. If you haven't seen it, it was handbuildt (mostly by one woman) into the cliffside just by Porthcurno Bay, near Penzance. It has possibly the most dramatic backdrop in the world: the Cornish sea and sky. You can go as a day-visitor and tour the theatre, or book tickets for a variety of summer performances.
Here's the link:

I went to Holywell Bay as a child and never forgot the sand dunes and rock pools; revisited 2 years ago, preparing to have memories shattered......it hasn't changed much!
Parked in a little NT carpark, walked over the dunes, walked the small river into the sea......sand in sandwiches, down cossie, windburn...nothing much had changed!! ;D My kids loved it too, fancy liking something mum recommended! ::)
Thanks so much for all of the input, ideas, views and links, it is more than i could have wished for, only thing is i will need a month never mind a week ;D
I am going to have a great google with all of the feed back that ive had.
Thankyou all so much for the response xx
Ace that looks a great place to stay, they even have tvs and ensuites by the looks of it...and its all inclusive? What more could you wish for ! :P ;D
If you like walking, Bodmin Moor is worth a visit, or cliff walking in many areas. It's easy to escape the crowds, just go somewhere you have to walk! There are loads of gardens, and most are worth a visit.
Well here I am again, just bumping this thread from last year ;D
So after all of your very useful and well appreciated tips and advice, we had a fantastic holiday in ......
.

Jamaica ;D ;D ;D
Would definitely recommend it, it was amazing ~ anyway' about seven weeks after coming home from that trip we went to Devon for a week staying in a lovely little fishermans cottage in Brixham.
As I said previously we have not been to Devon/Cornwall for donkeys, well 22 years I think as the exotic locations always draw me.....anyway had such a brill time in Devon that we have now finally booked this years holiday ..........in Cornwall ;D .....well better late than never ;)
We have booked a little grade two listed building in Port Isaac, looks lovely so ive been re-reading all of your threads for top tips 8)
when are you going, honeybee ?..we're going in august to a site near eden..weather's going to be brill ;D
We are going in June manic, so will miss you, shame, might have been nice to meet up :)
What area are you staying?
Been doing massive research and being big foodies, its either a trip to Ricks or a trip to Jamies, not sure which yet....mind you, if hubby had his own way it would be a trip to the chippy :D
break away eden holidays is the name of the place we booked with, lovely little site, bit inland but we always travel to beaches anyway and we'll be doing the eden trip again..always go in the evening, much too hot to go into the canopy during the day.
Rick's restaurant seems a little too rich for me, don't know about Jamie's apart from the stunning views there ;D
we always go to bedruthan steps when we;re up that way..beautiful place and a nice home made cafe there , national trust as well
maybe next time :)
ooooh I love cornwall, I miss it when I'm not there.
We often stay near kennack sands its a lovely beach with good rock pools. I love the quiet areas.
Nearby you have kynance cove which is stunning but very steep to get down to. Then there is roskillys ice cream yummmmmm which is in St Keverne, you can see the cows being milked and its lovely to walk round.
There is also Goonhilly satellite earth station.
Cadgwith is a great little fishing village but personally my husband will do the driving roung there, very steep and windy to scary for me.
Praa sands is a nice beach between The Lizard and Penzance.
Past Penzance you have got Mousehole and Lamorna, the cafe at Lamorna is fab they do great food, and I always visit Lamorna Pottery.
The minack theatre is stunning this year we are going to try and get to see a play.
If you are a member of the national trust its brilliant, you have loads of gardens to visit and free parking at some beaches.
Trengwainton, Trelissick, Glendurgan, Trerice, Lanhydrock.
I love Cornwall can you tell ;D have a great time.
when are you going, gardening-gal and where ?
If you're going to the far end, follow the coast road from Penzance, through Newlyn, onto Mousehole, Sennen, Land's End and then onto St.Ives.
My Mum lives in Truro, I'm going down there on friday. :D
green with envy ;D dtw
Over the years I have worked down in Cornwall without a problem, finally last year we went down to Truro on the Falmouth road with our caravan for ten days, things went fine untill one day we went in a pub just round the corner from Truro Cathedral and this moaning Cornish git did nothing but moan about tourist sorry mate its us that keep the county afloat, so this year they can stuff it and its back to the Isle -of- wight, I felt like smacking him :)
I love St Ives,it is busy and bustling. For more peace Sennen is great. We rented a house there once right next to the sea.We hope to go back one year. You need a strong nerve to drive round the lanes.
Helston is nice.Vist Frenchmans creek the place after which Daphne du Maurier named her novel.
manicscousers We are going down for two weeks in August (hopefully the weather won't be too bad) and we are going to be camping right next to kennack sands on the Lizard. We just can't afford the caravans etc at that time of year so we are trying out the camping option.
we used to go camping every year, I love it, just limited mobility now, can't get up and down off the floor ;D
we're going with my sister, her daughter and my grandson and got quite a good deal..
I love Kennack sands, we went when my daughter was 7, she's 30 now..we're down there from 16th to 30th august..gotta go then as Lesley's a teacher..have a wonderful time, if you go to kynance cove, give it my love, wonderful place..no chance of getting down there now .. ;D
and the weather's going to be wonderful, I've ordered it ;D
Thanks for ordering the good weather ;D
Just for those that feel like they are missing cornwall (I AM)

LOL okay I'll stop promoting it. ;D If the traffic is really bad this year you can blame me :D
Thanks for all the great advice and fab pics. I will be taking lots of scribbled notes with me ;D
Sorry for the delay in replying but my laptop decided to give up and die and no amount of articificial respiration would revive it....so my lovely hubby has been shopping and returned with a replacement, he knows its worth it just to keep me quiet :D
Dont forget Trago Mills, like wilkos, poundland, lidls, and aldi all rolled into one!!!
i like Penryn.
