Title: Aubergines - potting on
Post by: greyhound on February 25, 2007, 16:46:21
First time I've tried growing aubs from seed.  I started with a few early in case they didn't germinate, but I have 6 out of 6 about 5 cm high now,  :)  so I guess it's coming up to the time to pot them up.

My question is - do I plant them deep in up to their necks, as with tomatoes?

They're Black Beauty, by the way - courtesy of the Great Wyevale 25p Clearout.

Well done you!

Never thought about it - certainly not the same need, so just comfortably deep?

Thanks, Tim.  Do they not root from the stem in the same way, then?

I don't think so, my ones last year didn't.

Are they perennial?
I have some plants from last year still in my garden in pots,
they didn't produce very much at all. They are the smaller red variety.
Hopefully they'll burst into life again.  :D

Not to my knowledge, Greyhound. But, as I said, never thought about it!

Grethoud, last year I did bury mine up to the first pair of leaves.  Some of mine were very leggy others  not so, but it didn't seem to hurt them any !!  ;D

Good to know Flowerlady cos mine are distinctly leggy & that's what I plan to do.

Yes - of course - I was not allowing for leggy seedlings. Sorry!

Only cos I didn't heed your warning, Tim & planted them too early!

Hmmm, think I'll give it a go, then.  If it all goes pete tong there's still plenty of time to sow some more.

Good news, I cleaned out my greenhouse today and found a Red aubergine that has started producing new growth.
So  I shall have at least one established plant to grow.
There are another three in my garden, in pots, but I don't think they have survived the winter.

I shall be sowing loads of seeds from wednesday onwards.
