I know that I must be in the minority, especially amongst kids, but my absolute favourite is Sprouts, closely followed by Parsnip.
What's yours?
Jo.
No1, has to be warm fresh cooked beetroot, I even make a super chocolate cake with it in, followed closely by my favourite squashes and sweet potatoes. Some varieties of tomatoes,eg Sungold or Cherokee purples have to be right up there, and new potatoes, just dug, preferably Charlottes smothered in homemade butter along with the toms and the first of my asparagus. Oh and it is still February XX Jeannine
my thought remains the same, whatever is cooked and put in front of me !
I am SO looking forward to a huge crop of peas this year (my first year). i don't want to hear about maggots and other nasties, MY crop will be bountiful, pest free and won't even reach the pan !
i do actually like sprouts and am a great fan of parsnips, carrots/suede, broadies and even runners. as said on the other thread, it's all in the cooking.
;D
French beans :D
I love sprouts!
My new favourite food is butternut squash, made into a soup by boiling onion and squash in water with stockcube and some chilli. Really sweet to start, getting hotter in your mouth by the second. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Also, cant beat a cherry tomato fresh off the plant and still warm.
Oh, not to forget lettuce smothered in balsamic vinegar.
Perhaps I should stop now.....cant wait till summer ;D
cj :)
I started thinking it must be asparagus then thought of new potatoes with mint & butter & then broad beans, & then kale, & then leeks & then I thought well just everything [apart from the dreaded beetroot].
everything apart from marrow!..love fresh peas, carrots from the ground, red mustard in ham sandwiches ;D
butternuts, roasted with sweet potatoes and roast onions, boy am I hungry now ;D
The OH said about an hour ago "are you hungry, fancy some spaghetti?". There i was thinking al dente spaghetti tossed in olive oil, some herbs and shavings of parmesan.
what did i get, tinned hoops on toast !

Since growing my own, my taste for raw veg has just gone bananas (???)!
Sweetcorn, peas, root veg and all the brassicas - straight from the ground to the gob. I don't even stop to wash 'em (that's what sleeves are for). Be it in the garden or the lottie, I could graze for Britain!!! Must be all that fresh air.
Fave veg - raw or cooked - broccoli.
I'm also addicted to parsley. Can't get enough of it. I've even gone to the supermarket and bought pots of the stuff, supposedly to grow on windowsills, and had them stripped bare within an hour of getting home. Anyone else experienced this? Is there a helpline? ???
Sprouts, Sprouts and more Sprouts, raw peas, cooked peas, raw cabbage, cooked cabbage, anything that goes into a nice tangy bubble & squeak.
Without wanting to be rude, or to be told off by the Moderator, any veggy that comes under the saying, "Good old farting gear"
Onions
new potatoes. jacket potatoes. roast potatoes . beetroot. ::)
Potatoes of any variety! French beans, Peas, Squash. Well most things really!!!
barkingdog
Sweetcorn wins by a niblet although I love virtually any veg. I make a lot of bread for myself and have recipes that include vegetables in the bread. It's a great (and different) way of incorporating vegetables into the diet. I also use it as a sneaky way of getting the nephew to eat healthily when they come visit.
CC
Everything but squash :(
The greatest delight tho is to eat seasonally......the first sprouts, the first parsnip, the first sprouting broccoli ...bliss! And then the different ways of cooking them all...
beetroot or sweetcorn cant decide especially if the beetroot is just cooked and warm or the sweetcorn is picked and cooked within the hour........oh and asparagus too
Broad Beans, parsnips, swedes, floury tatties, caramelised onions and corn on the cob.
I have a real thing about mixed bean salads.
Alishka has got it right - (as usual! :)) - except about squash which is delicious. Everything is wonderful in its season - except curly kale and okra, of course.
Sweetcorn Hmmmm. Mushrooms and onions. :P :P :P :P :P ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Difficult question!
I guess anything just picked and fully ripe is the best I can do! ;D
I'm starting to have doubts about this place....I may be imagining things, but did someone say that they DON'T LIKE BROAD BEANS??? No wonder the country's in a state, with people like that one the loose!
Broad beans, savoy cabbage, carrots and fennel
I agree Author. YOU DONT LIKE BROAD BEANS!!
They're all mad, the philistines.
Squashes (various)....it's not that I don't like them, rather that they don't like me :'( stomach cramps & the squits, however they're cooked....is this too much information? ;D ;D ;D
Ooooooo, okra.....unctuous gooey glory 8)
Artichoke and asparagus. Potatoes any which way. Toms straight off the plant. Yum yum.
of course Mushrooms too! But I dont really class them as a vegetable.
No celery lovers yet then. :-X
I love turnip, mashed with a bit of butter and black pepper.
I'm going to try the butternut squash recipe, I had some curry flavour butternut squash soup last year, but just chilli sounds good.
I'm a chilli lover too, I made some sauce last year from 10 different types.
Deep fried aubergine grilled with mozzerella cheese
Roasted beetroot with thyme and garlic
Plain boiled beetroot with fresh bread and cheese
New potatoes roasted with fresh rosemary
Courgettes in butter and black pepper
Steamed savoy cabbage
Spinach with cream and cheese
Baked potatoes stuffed with broccoli and onions
Carrots cooked in orange juice with garlic
A HUGE mix of all vegetables in a crock pot roasted then braised in red wine
Whole roasted onions
Leeks in white wine and cheese sauce
........ oh the list is endless ;D And looking at my list, my arteries are probably a bit 'tough' ::)
I love celery but only raw..with cream cheese, very good if you've got arthritis, not to hit yourself with !! ;D
Oops I forgot the sweetcorn, form plant to pot in ten minutes mmmm.......Actually I like it raw too. XX Jeannine
Caramelized onions / cauliflower & broccoli covered with cheese sauce
got to be my all time greats :-* :-*
Not so very long ago I had a passionate and tender cyber affair with a with a woman in Australia. I was ready to leave my wife and go to live on the other side of the world.
Then she dumped me. I can only assume it was because I liked broad beans and she didn`t ???
am I allowed raspberries ,picked in evening sunshine and warmth?

Trixie, how about carrots with olive oil, garlic, chillies, lemon juice & chicken stock (or veggie stock if you must)?
sungold tomatoes for me, and much better than those shop ones anyday !!
Mashed potato and spring cabbage. All with large amounts of Lurpak.
And a bit of raw celery ;)
Every veg known to mankind, especially celery raw or braised and potatoes-oh how I love spuds- in any form. I don't eat celeriac because of it's antisocial side effects. :o ;D

it's okay if you do mash half and half with celeriac..it doesn't affect my ibs so can't be too bad ;D
PSB closely followed by runner beans and curly kale
Must say there is not a veg that I do not like, do not know if it is A case of when I was a child I did not get the choice of saying, like children do today, that I do not like this and I do not like that if it was put on the table, thats what you ate. Sorry I know it sounds cruel but that is the way it was 40 to 50 years ago.
My number one favourite is spinach. King of vegetables, IMO.
Broad beans are probably second.
Celery is pretty high up the list, ideally proper "dirty" celery from the Fens.
Aubergine, probably the most versatile veg of all.
Oh, and freshly picked runner beans. We all take them for granted, but they're a delight.
I love ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, winter squashes, sugar snap peas, new potatoes, garlic, leeks, spring onions, aubergines, chillies, spinach, french beans, broad beans, broccoli... (the list goes on). :P

How true, and as my Dad was a Greengrocer we had to eat the stuff that didn't sell but other benefits were Muscat grapes, pomegranates, coconuts, figs etc. Oh joy, I'm drooling at the memory. :P
Forgot to say every Sunday afternoon tea was some thing that I can no longer stand Tinned fruit and jelly with bread and butter, revolting :(
and evaporated milk ? ;D

I think potatoes have an enchantingly mischievous way with them.

thats hilarious! I love them too although I find them more demurely seductive.
As soon as I see a tin of carnation milk on the shelves in the shop the memories all come flooding back, please someone stop these nightmares
sweet potatoes, mashed with spuds, made into wedges with olive oil, put in to soup with squash, onions and chilli..roasted in the oven with other veggies, just love them ;D

Ah Richard, you should live in our house...... BW still craves tinned pear halves and evap.
Yes I love them all. I suppose if I could only have one..... it would be onions .. or garlic? or savoy cabbage ... or fresh young broad beans or.... I guess I love them all.
Interestingly, Richard, on the topic of kids and food: this evening we had prawn fried rice - leftover basmati from stir fry last night. Lucy, my granddaughter (5) took one look and said "I don't like prawns. I'm allergic". I told her that was fine she only had to eat 3. 3 prawns later she asked "Can I have some more please?" ::) ;)
Fresh peas and sweetcorn are great but It's got to be roots... Parsnips, potatoes, carrots, after decades of not managing to grow them, but with Stan... Swede (Neeps)
Beetroot as one veg on its own I think, but my favourite snack is the inside of broccoli, cabbage or cauliflower stems, the crispy bit you get when you trim off the outer skin. Cook's perks! ;D
PSB is my absolute fave. More more more paaarp. Sorry. Im my house it's loveling called f*rt.
Thinking of it several things have than "pet name" - Sprouts are f*rt bombs.
I live in a very strange little world but luckily I live with strange people who care for me :-)
Toot toot.
Helen x
Crying with laughter here. Makes me think of jerusalem f*rtichokes, of which I have copious quantities, both in the kitchen, and also the allotment. Delicious when lightly stir fried with garlic and other veg, but they do insist on making their presence known :D
Derek :)
Im another love um all gal :D (except aubergines & chicory! :P) reading this thread made me sooooo hungry i raided the fridge and I'm now muching on................................................ CELERY!! marvellous :) bit green this time of year tho prefer it nice and white not keen on the leaves tho but luckily OH eats those so no waste 8)
My joint top 3 would be kumara (roasted), Kaboucha/buttercup squash and asparagus. I won't go into the rest the list is too long.
mmm, warm beetroot, aubergines, okra, new potaoes, sweet potatoes, broad beans mmmmmm artichokes, blackberry & apple crumble, baked garlic .... gawd I'm hungry
It is so difficult to choose as everything you grow has that fresh fantastic taste. Love newly dug potatoes, and carrots - so sweet. The fresh green taste of lettuces, cucumbers, peas, dwarf french beans and the earthy taste of leeks. Cabbages, brussel sprouts, onions, shallots, and I love my squash (I get very fond of them), I could just go on and on.
We are not keen on broad beans, though I love how they look when they are growing and the flowers are very pretty. Year after year I grow beetroot which never fails for me, but like Lish and her squash, boiled beetroot is a NoNo for me. I love to eat it and it is so sweet and yummy, but oh, the griping pains and the bowelly aftereffects, I am just not going to go there, too unpleasant!! :P busy_lizzie
Upsides for us tho, b-l.....beet tops are delicious & my various squashes look very arty in a basket in the kitchen 8)
All is not lost ;D
