Title: Briza maxima
Post by: caroline7758 on February 20, 2007, 15:29:07
I love the seedheads of this grass and grew it in pots last year. The grass has continued growing throughout the winter and the plants are now completely potbound. Two questions- if I just leave them, will they produce more "flowers", and would it be foolish to plant them out in the soil since they are obviously so prolific (i.e. invasive)?

Q.1; Yes they will but they might not perform as well because they are pot bound.

Q.2; Pot them up into a bottomless bucket and sink bucket into soil this will keep them in check.

alternatively; divide them into manageable clumps and plant out. This can be done annually.

Thanks, TeeGee- think I'll divide them and keep them in check!

Hi Caroline.  I'm trying these for the first time this year, also in pots, so I'm so pleased to hear that they were successful.  Did you grow yours from seed?

Yes, and beware- I thought at first that they were just going to produce boring grass, so be patient and wait for the flower stems- they are so pretty!

I think you will find that the seeds spread more than the roots. So poking them in an old bucket  will not help much.
