Went to look at the trays of cabbage and lettuce in the greenhouse today and noticed that they were now poking their heads through at last. Because of the increase in power bills this year I cannot afford to run the heating in there so I covered them with fleece, they are about 8 days later germinating without heat but at least they are up now and as long as I watch out for cold nights should be OK now.
We've put stuff out under fleece in the Ghouse... moving them all to the other one for the spring clean tomorrow, may have some evidence!
:)
sprouts, idol cauli, beetroot and carrots in peat pots all up, now in g house :)
A few onions showing in the seed tray should I wait until more are up before I remove the lid. ;D ;D ;D
Couple of my cabbages are up too sown 5th Feb. No sign of leeks yet, chillis or tomatoes yet.
Caulis, sweetpeas, leeks and toms up. Only just tho. Leeks, caulis and sweetpeas in the only just heated greenhouse.
Blimey, you lot are a bit keen. The only thing I have planted is some chilli seeds in the propagator (and only because they may take 2 weeks to germinate). I won't really think about planting until mid march (I am in Yorkshire) as in my experience things will catch up if planted a bit late but tend to suffer if planted too early.
Thoughts?
leeks and caulis are an early variety to be sown Jan/Feb. Sweetpeas should have been done before Christmas, but I ran out of time. Tomatos, yes, maybe a bit keen, but with the way my life is, I have to grab every chance I can to get things done, and if that means at 2am I am up sowing tomatos because I won't have the chance for another month, then so be it. ;D I am actually late with my toms this year...normally start them off in early January. I still have a lot more to do, but have to try and find an afternoon where I can do it. yes, I agree, mostly, things do catch up, and I wouldn't direct sow on the allotment until mid to late March, but indoors, mine do okay.
I know what you mean, ej, we all have to do things when we can, and my tomatoes etc aren't showing yet, although the caulis, cabbage and sprouts are already :)
Make that three onions showing should I take the lid off yet. ;D ;D ;D
got 2 cucumbers showing now, yahooooo ;D
the bedroom resembles a g/h, the spare room resembles a g/h, the g/h resembles the bedrooms and by the time that i'm brave enough to take off the bubblewrap and give the g/h a good clean, there will be at least double of what there is already.
i'm in trouble if everything germinates !
;D
Same here , My spare room looks like a GH. My toms are up and lettuce. and some leeks. Have only sewn a few just to see if they do ok. I don't normally start things off so early but seeing how the weather is I thought I would try. Do beetroot do any good started off in peat pots cos I would love some early ones.
we've just transplanted 6 peat pots of beetroot in to the poly border, just to see what happens :)
may try it. cheers
i have about 20 spindely japanese onions showing there currently like leek seedlings. They have been in since oct any idea when they might be ready??
How are other peoples japanese outdoor planted onions doing....
My onions are doing fine cambourne7, not very tall but they do look healthy :)
I've got an assortment through now.
Onions
Pepper
Tomato
Thyme
Calabrese (although I have since read that these are better direct sown)
Lettuce
Cucumber
I have got some temporary shelving that I put in the conservatory in spring. This will hold the seedlings till spring, and then be replaced with melon, cucumber and tomato plants.
cj :)
I have peas, leeks and onions just popping up. ;D ;D ;D
just checked and my peas look like there just popping though - yippie

you've got no idea how much better that makes me feel, Wasp_Box!
this is my first year, I don't have a greenhouse/conservatory/heated propagator, I've only got one bed dug on my plot at the moment, I haven't planted
anything inside or out yet, and am beginning to get the fear :o
potatoes will probably be the first thing to go in, I was thinking mid March (based on various threads and discussions on this site), followed by a mad panic of outdoor planting that I haven't even thought about yet! it all depends on how many beds I have ready... so more a case of "in at last"!
peas, melons, cucumbers and greyhound cabbage..yahoo ;D oh, and tigerella tomatoes
Nothing sown here yet, either. But greenhouse is ready to receive now, having had a clean and fumigate, so next week me and my radio will be found in there a-sowing at last. ( I can't wait, I've never been so organised ;D)
Scousers where did you get the tiger toms from OH wants me to grow them. ;D ;D ;D
My first chilli is up, along with a second tray of sweetpeas.
Hope your not staying up all night EJ ;D I'm off to my pit now I know Spurs have won. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;)
Thought i was all ready got about 8 varieties of toms, broad beans, cauli's,cabbage, brussels and chilli's all over the windowsills as well as 15kg of spuds chitting away. Now i've read some of you have the beetroot and leeks on the go already i've gotta get going again! :o
lol i thought we all weren't supposed to start yet !!!! i've still to clean the g/h !
