Title: They're here
Post by: kt. on February 16, 2007, 13:50:08
These hens are the chicks I got last June. They are just starting to lay this past week or so.

The chicks are one month old now. In the same pen but sectioned off.

They are lovely.
I'm going to have to replace my chooks that were killed the other week.
The garden is just not the same without them.

they look lovely and healthy as already said.

My poor things are a bit muddy at the moment and its easy to tell which ones have been caught by the cockeral - Mickey!

They look lovely KT - did you rear the chicks yourself?

Nice looing set up too - mine is a bit more 'basic'.  :)

Got the first lot at 8weeks old last year. 7 of 14 chicks were cockerals. Gave 5 away this past month. Gonna get rid of the other 2. The 11 new chicks I have reared since 4 days old. They are almost 1 month now.

How soon can you sex them?  With our banties you have to wait till they either crow or lay an egg  :).  The first lot we hatched had 6 males out of 7!

Not sure. I hope not to breed them as I have plenty. One of the cockerels was having a go this morning. I want rid of them both.

Do flocks of hens need a cockerel in the bunch to keep laying well? Or will this cause other problems?

No, definitely not.  Some people say that having a cockrel stops the hens bullying each other but I've never had any problems at all.  I also think the amount of attention the poor chicks get continually ought to constitute sexual harassment.   :)
