Title: what a wonderful week that was...
Post by: aquilegia on May 04, 2004, 11:39:11
Had the whole of last week off work, so no internet access (missed you lot!) but loads of time for gardening!

First weekend was actually too HOT (what?) to do the heavy work, just pottered about, admiring the blooms and sat on the bench a lot.

Then spent the whole of Tuesday in the garden. Nine hours of glorious gardening. Double dug the bed the pond's in, with hubby's help of course (he gave a wonderful new meaning to the term double digging when, while I was having a break, he used both forks at once. It didn't work very well!) The resent addition of my late grandad's  :'( fork to the shed really helped. It was also lovely to finally use all that homemade compost I've been making for the last year. We were just finishing the penultimate trench when the heavens opened...

Then they stayed open for three days, during which time the only contact with the garden was a spectacular shopping trip to a wonderful local nursery (perinnials for 65p each!) I only bought five plants (three of which were of course aquilegias!) but I plan to go back again this week for more.

On Saturday, sheer desperation rather than good weather made us finish the digging. Then we raked the top layer to remove further lumps (goodness only knows what was on the site before it became a garden, but we found loads of bit of black charred lumps of something, rusty metal, glass, etc) and finally planting began...

The bed now contains a patio apple tree, too many aquilegias for me to count, a cranesbill geranium, aster, tulips, daffs, crocuses, campanula, purple hebe, sedum and silver stuff that I can never remember the name of. Most of which were dug up from elsewhere in my over crowded patch!

I feel thoroughly Ground Forced! (apart from the still unlined pond!)

Photos are awaiting film finishing, developing and scanning...

Fantastic Aqui.  Can't wait to see the pics.  Our pond is now lined so the edges are the next project...if it ever stops raining!

WOW Aqui - you've been busy ::)  Look forward to seeing photos of all your effort.  Could the silver plant be Cineraria :-\

Pat - that's the one. I keep looking it up, thinking about it really hard so I actually remember and then totally forget. Cineraria. Cineraria. Like film-bit of opera (cinema-aria). Only not quite.
