Title: Tree paeony seedlings!
Post by: Robert_Brenchley on February 15, 2007, 22:18:53
I planted seed of Paeonia lutea ludlowii a year ago last December; I forget who sent it to me. last September I noticed that roots had appeared; I just spotted today that shoots are emerging. Hopefuly, in 3-4 years, I'll have flowers.

I love peonys, i have 5 bush ones given to me from a friend at work when she dug up a massive bush and i have replanted into 5 smaller groups. Just hoping they have survived the move, also scattered the seed pods before winter so that they would get a frost  ;D

I have 3 tree peonys i got end 2005 from a specialist grower www.kelways.co.uk

Duchess of Marlborough
Shintogen
Shimane Chojuraku

They put on a couple of inches growth last summer and i am hoping they may flower in the new 2 years ( cant wait )

I think it was me, Robert. Unfortunately, the 'mummy' bush in the park was cut down to ground level so I won't be selecting seed from it for a few years.
I have some youngsters though, 3 or 4 years old, no sign of flowers yet. However, all 4 of my Paenoia rockii plants, 5 years old (grown from Chilterns seed)  are set to flower for the first time this season!

It may well have been you; you certainly sent me something. I planted P rockii (from POD) at the end of last year so hopefully it'll be up next year.

It would be interesting to know more about the history of the herbaceous paeonies on that site; I'm sure I read somewhere that the existing varieties are all old, and there are only about 30-odd in cultivation. They sell 36, which fits.

I planted some tree paeony seeds last summer. The packet said that whenever you planted them, they would still come up in Jan/Feb.No sign yet, but I'm still hopeful ;D

They need TWO winters before they will produce a shoot (I think the root grows during the first winter).
You should see seeds appear in about a year's time.

Give them time; they need it. Just keep them moderately damp, and let them get chilled over winter.
