Title: Newbie seeking Globe artichoke advice
Post by: evoo on February 15, 2007, 16:10:06
Hi all - first post here.
I have a Globe artichoke that we brought back from France last year in a fairly large pot. I want to plant it out soon - what sort of growing conditions do they like?
Any advice gratefully received - oh and I'm in North Wales, if that helps!

There are perennial, but sometimes don't make it thriugh the winter if not well mulched, mine have made it the last three years even not muched 1 time,I would keep it in it's pot for now and put it out when the soil is warm.it should be Ok, Mine have ahselterd position but I don't think it is crucial. We were given a plant last year.  It was quite old and large, so we split it up at the roots, and now have three flourishing globe artichoke plants.  We planted them in well-composted soil in a spare but sunny corner of the plot, kept them well-watered, and err, that's it.  They've gone a bit frost-bitten, but it looks as though a springtime tidy-up will see them right.

Thanks, I think I'll prepare a plot for it against a south facing fence, ready for planting, say, end March?
Great site, BTW.

Hi and welcome. GAs are far tougher than you might think, they can take the cold but not cold waterlogged soil.

Don`t let it crop for a season or two-patience is a virtue. Then you can take a crop and also take off some side growth to increase the number of plants

I've got some seedlings coming along nicely which I plan to crop from this year [thank you Emma Jane :)] I shall also leave a couple to form strong plants for next year.  I've also got a couple of one year old plants - so hoping for lots of GA's which I love - not sure about the rest of the family though.

You're welcome Mary.  ;D  My GA haven't died back at all this winter.  I have reduced my row by half as I am alone in loving them.  Cleo and other hexperts....should I be thinking of feeding them other than the rotted compost/manure they get shoved around them soon??
