Title: sowing seed onion
Post by: cambourne7 on February 14, 2007, 18:41:37
Hi Guys,

http://www.powen.freeserve.co.uk/veg/onionseed.htm

Just got an alert ( set up last year to remind myself ) that i need to be sowing my seed onion outside soon.
( i.e. not in modules in a greenhouse or coldframe )

When are other people sowing onion seed outside.

The seed i have are

Onion - Ailsa Craig
Onion - Owa
Onion - Red Florence
Onion - Utah Jumbo
&
Shallot - Prisma F1 Hybrid

Any advice?

My red onion seeds are still in a sealed pack, just havent had time. Probably too late to start now. Will possibly have to settle for onion sets ::)

My ailsa craig i sowed about 3-4 weeks ago and nothing has come up... sowed inside as per packet instructions... might put the rest out side direct and see if i have any better luck.

Have had brilliant crops of red baron onions here from seed, sowing quite late, April, and cropping from July onwards - but do keep them well watered until they're nicely established if you sow this late, as it tends to get a bit dryer that time of year.

Onions grow leaves until Mid-Summer's Day and thefeafter the energy in the leaves is transfered into the bulb so you need a healthy looking plant by 21 June if you want a reasonable sized bulb

I never do  apart from salad onions (spring)

Quotedoes anyone know what the sucess rate might be??

Quite low I would imagine when you consider they want a temperature of around 15°C (60°F) to germinate. Even in midsummer getting a continuous soil temperature like this for 10-14 days might be asking a bit much.

No! I'll stick to January sowing under heat.
