Hi everyone,
I got my allotment just before Xmas and have garlic, broad beans and onions already in a growing nicely. Do I need to get any of these covered up for the forthcoming cold snap?
Thanks.
Nah! - they should be alright!
Louise
Thanks for that reassurance ;)
We are on the Isle of Wight anyhow, so we normally don't get much in the way of ice and snow, just didn't want to see the hard work dead in the ground next week!
I'm with Louise on this one, I am 900ft up in the Pennines and I just leave mine to get on with it.
In fact the frost/cold helps the garlic to form cloves.
I've fleeced up my Broad Beans today - some of them had already succumbed to squishy stems, and we're due quite a bit of snow in Manchester.
Mind you mine got very leggy early on, so shorter stubbier ones might be okay... Fingers crossed...
Well, Thanks to you all for the advice.
As it happened, there was not a single flake of snow and no frost here.
As I type, brilliant sunshine here and out of the wind it's really quite warm!
I've got cloches over the broad beans - seem ok so far but I wish I'd added some fleece to be on the safe side.
Most you mentioned should be okay but regarding Broad Beans it does depend on type Aquadulce Claudia is fine right through the Winter, but if you have sown Express early then this would have to be covered.
None of mine are covered broad beans, onions or cabbages they should be looking after themselves once they have got started. ;D ;D ;D
Beachlover, i think we're spoilt here in south, I'm in Bournemouth and while my sister in Birmingham was being snowed in we were walking on beach with kids!!
