Post by: STEVEPARTRIDGE on February 04, 2007, 18:27:57
Hello all, sorry this update is a bit later than usual but with the weather being so wonderful this weekend I have been trying to get jobs done at home.

Thanks for the update. :) I like your piles of turf - can I ask if something similar done with couch grass means it will also be usable in time? I've been taking off all my couch grass and since it's clay soil it's difficult to separate soil and roots - so I'm just stacking up all of it.

Tina.

SP, great pics and a lovely plot.

TL, I was recutting the edges all round my plot today, and had loads of big clumps of grass with masses of clay soil attached. I understand from my betters on the lottie that if I didn't need to use it immediately I should leave it in a separate pile to dry out.

However, I wanted to put it back so as not to leave a trench at the edges of the plot, so I turned it grass-side down to kill it off and just leave the soil, which the frost should break up.

I'm afraid Tina that the couch grass will survive unless you can stop all the moisture getting to it. If possible lay what you are removing on a sheet of plastic so that hopefully the frost will help to break up the clay and any rain will help to wash some of it away leaving the couch grass roots which you can then either burn or take to the tip, hope this helps you regards Steve.

You can stack couch and leave it to rot, but you need to cover the heaps with black plastic.
