Title: info wanted on 2 radish and bean varieties
Post by: CityChick on February 01, 2007, 10:34:20
Got some seeds at a recent seed swap for:

radish - tientsin green
dwarf french bean - stangen blaukhulside

Can't find any info on either of them.  Even the guy at the seed swap table couldn't find them in several year's worth of HSL catalogues!

All I've learnt from Google is Tientsin is an area of northern China, so I'm guessing that the radish one to sow later in the year, as opposed to a summer one...

Anyone got any info or ideas on either of them?

dwarf french bean - stangen blaukhulside

I think that's spelled wrong. Look at this:

Not sure that's the same one.  I've already got some Blauhilde, and they're definitely a climber.  However, you've given me 2 more ideas from that link.... First its got "blau" in the name, so hopefully its a purple bean too.  And I could try some more googling, but this time on bohne, not beans... Thanks!

I reckon the tientsin green may be a cabbage.

Aw.... I hope not  :-\  It definitely says radish on the packet...

I found an american site with chinese radish seed that was either green outside and white inside, or green inside too!  Now that would be different - here's hoping :D

@city chick,
Quotestangen blaukhulside
having "stange" in its name, it suggests a climbing variety. "stange" means pole, as in bean pole.
"blaukhulside" maybe misspelled "blauhülsige", describing the pod´s colour.
I only know one climbing variety with blue pods: blauhilde. there are several dwarf ones though.

the radish isn't "tsintao green" perhaps?

Yes I agree. It's just a description of the bean as purple podded, I reckon it is Blauhilde as all "blauhülsige stangenbohne" I found on Google.de refer to Blauhilde.

No, I'm convinced its not Blauhilde now as I've opened the packets and the seeds look different.  Comparing the two Blauhilde seeds are long and thin, light brown in colour, the others are much rounder and fatter, and brown in a yellow-ish green kinda way.  I think they should also hence force be known as "seed swap mystery blue" dwarf bean!! ;D  Unless they turn into climbers ::)

I have checked all my veg gardening books. None of them have these varieties in at all.

I have just done a search on google and it definitely says the radish is a cabbage. It also asks to check spelling for the french bean.

There is a cabbage with that name, but Tientsin is the name for a region in China, so I don't see why if there is a cabbage from Tientsen there can't also be a chinese radish from Tientsin too... (crosses fingers, touches wood etc.... ;))
