Hello to you all!
I wonder if you could give me some advice on my spring cabbage! i brought plug plants in october and planted them straight away, the root systems were not great i have to say! and they have only grown a small amount! is this normal? i dug one up this morning to check for clubroot but looked ok! Are they supposed to grow over winter??
I Appreciate any advice you have to offer!!
Many Thanks x
It's still the middle of Winter! (Crikey who would believe it) ;)
If they're healthy, they'll be waiting for Spring to bulk out.
How far apart are they planted?
Hello Supersprout
I know its winter but everyone elses look HUGE!
I planted them 12" apart.

I know how you feel. I planted 15 in autumn. Only 2 have made it through to now without disease. >:( I knew I was dicing with where I put them to test the soil. Now planting spuds this year in the entire quadrant.
They will want a feed soon as they emerge from winter and decide to grow again;
Week 12; Remove discoloured foliage and hoe around the plants.
Boost growth by hoeing in either sulphate of ammonia or nitro-chalk at a rate of 1oz (30g) per sq m.
Alternatively; use 3oz (90g) per sq m of growmore or similar
Last year I bought my spring cabbage seeds from Netto reduced to 10p, planted some in modules in my green house and some in the open ground. In September the plants from modules were moved outside and now what a difference it is between these two batches; the ones from modules are doing much, much worse than the ones grown outside. It was a good lesson for me, cabbage sown in the open ground is much stronger than cabbage from plug plants.

Not for me they aren't :o
My spring cabbages seem to be growing well but haven't heart up. Why would that be?
i bought mines as baby plants on ebay.
feeding??? with what
They might not be ready yet! :P
Seriously, one of the signs of new Spring growth is that they heart up.Start to look for other reasons if you still have no hearts in late March :)
