Picked my first carrots and some kale for tomorrows dinner.
Garlic i planted Nov have 4 inch strong green stems.
Brussel Sprouts have got a little mad and created lots of bushy growth but no fruit so that will have to come out. :o
And cabbage looks like its going be on target for April ;D
The Japanese seed onion and early carrots dont look like they have done much but you can see the early signs of gorwth.

I recommend winter radish as they give a lot more bulk and aren't "hot " when cooked.
Not a radish fan, the onions i planted aug 06 ( forgotten onion bulbs ) have taken but look like spring onions at the moment.
Will leave them for a while to see what happens...
Once cooked it is more like Turnip or swede... good in a mixed root mash!

I will agree with saddad on the winter radish. Altho peppery when used raw, when peeled and cooked with other roots, they are very good. I found they hold together better than spuds in a stew or soup - they don't cook away. I didn't grow as many parsnips last year as the one previous as we didn't use them all up that year, and my swedes didn't germinate and my turnips were frazzled off in the late summer sun as soon as they germinated, so the winter radish have provided us with a good root crop to bulk up the 'snips.
I had some parsnips and leeks out last week, and some more parsnips this week plus took some spuds home from the shed and found one lone shallot after I cleared out the shed. ;D ;D ;D
Harvested my last parsnips last week and last leeks yesterday :'( Just sprouts left now. But at least the plots will be empty for the spring!
Its sprouts, savoy, leek and calabrese on the menu today with a drop of onion gravy :P

Would you believe that I am still digging out potatoes!! I couldn't harvest them all in the autumn but those I dig up now are just as good. I harvested my romanesco and green calabrese last week. Although the heads were tiny I didn't want them to get the frost while I was away. We will be having them tonight with home grown leeks, parsnips and potatoes. ;D ;D
All I have left is some kale, brussels, perpetual spinach, leeks and parsley. Its good that we enjoy leek and potatoe soup, as we still have plenty of leeks.
all we've got left is a couple of butternuts, garlic and onions, apart from yum yum, fresh peas, runner beans, french beans, courgette etc in the freezer :P ;D ;D
I still have celeriac, parsnips and leeks in the ground. In the shed there are still three butternut squashes, three pumpkins and lots of garlic. I grew too much garlic so have reduced the quantity for this year. Most of the time I only cook for one - and there are some dishes that don't require garlic :).

Oooh yes i pulled some leek today... about 5 more leeks left in the ground for next week. I noticed a couple i pulled today stank and were rotton at the bottom? what is this and should i not grow any onions there for the rest of the year... i was going to put some garlic and spring onions where the leeks currently are.
