Title: Television gardening?
Post by: kitten on January 27, 2007, 20:28:38
Hi all, today we managed to get up the lottie and peg out our beds & paths! Yippee  ;D

Whilst there, our lottie neighbours expressed quite an interest in what we were doing.  The conversation went something like this...

Him: Well, what are you up to there then, what's all this about?
Me: (Trying not to sound like a tree hugging lunatic) Well, we're creating four rotation beds so we don't grow the same crop in the same place year after year.  It's our first year growing veg so we're giving it a go to see what happens.
Him: (Bewildered look) Oh, it's amazing how easy they make it look on the telly isn't it?  Yes, all this television gardening, we don't bother with all that around here.. ::)

My sister & I laughed all the way home  :D  So, we've decided to christen our organic/natural appraoch - television gardening!

So which television gardener are you going to fashion yourself on? Please not Carol with all her squealing, or that bra-less woman.

Well it takes all-sorts ;D
When I let my mum do my plot she had one of the older blokes asking her for a "peck" on the cheek. But you'll meet tonnes of fab people... there and on-line  ;)

The chap next to me has 3 plots side by side that have been in his family for over 50 years - All 1 big plot now - no fences. His family and he are always down at the plot all year. Not one weed ever!. In summer you see his 87ish yr old mother there with hoe in hand tapping away. Wonder how many kisses on the cheek she gets asked for?

Quote from: kitten....  Yes, all this television gardening....

As if crop rotation was something new.  For once it's not even a Victorian idea -- it was being done in medieval times!

*wonders what feudal farmers would have thought about 'television gardening'*
Oh, that's what MTV stands for: Medieval Television  ;)

Well - I find a lot of the "old salts" think they know best!

So i'd just do your own thing and not worry about them!

Hi louise, yeah we're ploughing on (pun intended  ;D ) regardless but i'm slightly concerned that i might not be able to keep up the friendly, neighbourly, amiable facade for much longer without snapping one of their heads off (metaphorically speaking of course ...  ::) )  ;D x

I had a pair of them leaning over my fence watching me when I was pottering about with string and a tape measure on sunday. then they asked me if I'd found anything interesting: I obviously wasn't gardening, I was carrying out an archaeological dig ::) :)

Yeah, they're the funniest aren't they norfolklass  ::) ::)

I'm just hoping that our 'television gardening' approach will yield plenty of beautiful produce and they'll be laughing on the other side of their faces (don't you just love your mum's old sayings lol  :D ).

As a newie on the plot I have had 5 different men call and have a chat each one offering different advise to what I should be doing !!!
So going to do as louise stella suggest - just do my own thing :P
