For the first time ever I have managed to grow an amarylis from scratch (as opposed to one already in flower) :)
My question is should I be feeding it? It is in the compost that came with the bulb and was planted at the beginnig of December.
While I am asking questions :D when it has finished flowering, what should I do with it to look after it and hopefully bring it on again next year?
Continue to water until the leaves die back, then let it dry out until it starts to show signs of regrowth. Meanwhile, while dormant, repot it.
Thanks for that.
Do you think I should be feeding it now?
A little feed once a month won't do any harm, but don't overdo it.
If it has finnished flowering you should start feeding with any high potash feed, I do this every time I water for about four months, then reduce the feed and after a while stop watering. At this stage you should have leaves of up 2/3 ft in length. LEAVE the leaves on until you want to restart the bulb, this allows all the goodness to go into the bulb and enable it to flower each year. I have done this since 1987 and give bulbs away to charity raffles each year.We bought one bulb on a trip to holland.I only repot when I want to seperate the bulbs ,other than than I pot on to a largrer pot up to 9 inches.

I agree with others when flowering has finished the bulb needs to build up strenght watering and feeding. When the better weather comes you can sink the pot in a shady part of the garden so the bulb does not dry out just ticks over. In the autumn bring into a greenhouse and place on its side so not to get water. When its ready you will see growth then either repot or stand upright and water. May flower next year for you but the following year for sure. Just remember these have been forced to flower for Xmas market I think they are a spring bulb ( but I could be wrong) good luck.
There leaves look good indoors even if the flowers have gone damp tissue over the leaves helps to refresh them as well.
