Title: Rooster potatoes
Post by: Curryandchips on January 23, 2007, 21:17:12
Went to Wilko's at lunchtime to examine their potatoes - they don't stock potatoes in their Coventry store ...  :(

Popped in at the local market - there is a good choice available at reasonable prices. They have rooster which I have heard is supposed good. Can anyone give me hands on knowledge of whether they are as good as claimed?

Derek :)

It's very popular in Ireland.

I tried it and it produced a tasty large potato, good yield.

Good as mash, baked, roast or chip

I bought some at the supermarket, Derek, to try out in potato gratin which requires a floury potato IMHO. They worked very well and were tasty too. Don't know how they are to grow and what they are resistant to though. Nice yellow colour under a dull red skin. Maincrop I believe.

one of my seed catolgues mentioned that they had a limited supply of Rooster and expected them to sell out very quickly.

Not tried them personally, but they sound amazing if hype is correct.

Hi Derek,

I have brought them from the supermarket occasionally, they are a good all round potato, nice flavour and good for everything.

If they are not too expencive and you have the land why not give them a try.

Hi - I notice they are on the list for Ryton Potato Day this weekend. I tried them out this week in the kitchen and they were quite tasty as jacket and a pie topping, so I will try them on the plot this year too.

One of the men at my plot was talking about these today. He says they are brilliant and plans to grow a lot of them. :)

An extract from T&M
Potato : Rooster

A very tasty red from Ireland, an excellent all rounder producing oval tubers with pale yellow, dry, floury flesh. We consider this will soon become a popular standard - do give it a try.

Uses: Baker/fry/general purpose.
