Title: Anybody got a green house left?
Post by: deboydoyd on January 23, 2007, 14:02:51
My what a nice few weeks.Had 2 greenhouses, an old 12x8 which has now been refasioned to a big lump of bricks, wood and glass and a newish aluminium 8x6 which at present is bent into a twisted (possibly bendable back) mass of metal at a strange 45 degree angle into a near by bush. Suppose its just one of those things. Has anybodies greenhouses survived unscathed?

Mine's still standing but there's hardly any glass!  I was picking the broken shards up on Saturday and I got a tiny piece lodged in my thumb.  I can't see it, but every now and again I catch it on something and it don't half sting! :(

We were very, very lucky here. No damage. I at least expected to find my shed halfway to the Estuary ! Greenhouse behind a wall so all was ok. So sorry to read about everyone elses devastation.  :'(

Some glass intact so I could try and patch up the aluminium one if we can get it back upright.Quite alot of glass in bits on ground but it will clean up. Our council do regular pick-ups of rubbish but unfortunately it's like reguarly once a year! I suppose its part of the fun of allotmenting!

Cor, sorry about that.  We were very lucky - our garden is quite sheltered so thankfully, the old greenhouse is still standing and all panes intact.

That's really painful. I had glass in my index finger last year and it wouldn't come out, it actually moved the wrong way and went in deeper. Ask your chemist for some Magnesium paste. You put it on, stick a plaster on top of it and gradually the glass works it's way out. Does the job for splinters too

Already thought of that, thanks.  But the splinter's right at the tip of my thumb and a plaster wouldn't stick there for more than 5 minutes.  I'm not very good with plasters.  ::)

Micropore's a staple for me.Tape strips from the first thumb knuckle up over the thumb & down the other side. Do it all round the thumb. Tape more across your strips. ....DONE! You can get it in various widths but the 1" is the most useful all-purpose. Invariably have a roll in my handbag cos it's tear-off, no scissors needed, and useful to stick all-sorts or cover blisters, etc.

Bits of my greenhouse (polycarbonate sides and glass roof) are probably still in flight over SW London.  Sides blew out when something hit them turning the inside into a wind tunnel, aluminium frame bent and twisted out of shape, though the roof managed to stay in tact so no broken glass luckily.

Side panels about 4 foot x 2 foot and very light so once they take off that's it they're gone.  They cleared the trees at the side of the site which are >15m high so wind must have been pretty strong.  Now just got to trundle down to Wickes and buy some more polycarbonate and some clear silicon sealant to keep it all together.

Mine was trashed courtesy of some vandals. Mine neighbour's was totally trashed. He came up to me this morning to ask the size of my panes, I explained I had some wood to fill the gaps of the 9 broken panes. He said he was replacing all his panes with plastic, so would give any useful sizes to me.

I was so touched by his generosity that I gave him a large wooden panel - 6'x4', that he can use to make a wooden back for his greenhouse extension.

We both ended up better off.

OH's greenhouse at work......smithereens....and the frame buckled during the storms. Real shame....and it took him ages to clear the glass...

Having lost 13 panes of glass in the gales, I've just bought another greenhouse from eBay with most glass intact, some staging and louvre vents for less that it would have cost me to replace the glass! Picking up tomorrow! ;D

Two out of 3 greenhouses completely trashed   :'( And it blew the door off the duck shed and the fox ate Tyrone and Fizz, my two Aylesurys  :'(

Thinking of giving up the allotment with the 2 trashed greenhouses on. Can't possibly get them rebuilt in time for Spring .......WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH

I also have a phobia about broken glass. That's handy then!

Trixiebell. I am genuinely very sorry to hear your news. To think I moaned about my little bit of damage. It would be an awful shame if you felt you couldn't carry on. Hope you have got somebody who could clear up the glass for you. Let us know how you get on
Regards Lorna.

Awww thanks! I was most upset about the ducks though. I NEEEEEED to cuddle a duck every day  ;D Will get some more in the Spring.

EDIT: I've actually got 2 allotments - so wouldn't be giving up altogether. I don't think I'd EVER do that!
