Title: Blueberrys
Post by: grepmonkey on January 21, 2007, 22:12:39
Hi,

Ive just got my ploy, and was hoping to grow blueberries. I plan to go for pots with ericaceous (spelling?) compost and im looking for some advice;

How big a pot?
Is it ok to plant up now?
When can I expect a first crop?
How much do you get off a bush?
Presumably Ill need more than 1 bush for pollination, does it matter what types I get?
Can I get something else to pollinate them with that will change the berry?

Tips on where to buy or any other advise welcomed.

Thanks

QuoteHow big a pot?
12-24inch, depending on the size of the plant

QuoteIs it ok to plant up now?
OK but better in spring, it's gonna get cold out there

QuoteWhen can I expect a first crop?
again it depends on the size of the plant, no reason why it shouldn't be this year if they're large enough

QuoteHow much do you get off a bush
Some are more prolific than others, I'd estimate we get a pound or so from each plant, ours are only 18inches high so not fully grown yet

QuotePresumably Ill need more than 1 bush for pollination, does it matter what types I get?
Yes, 2 different varieties will give you much better polination, doesn't matter which 2

QuoteCan I get something else to pollinate them with that will change the berry?
No

Sorry, picked ours up locally

I bought three plants for about £1.99 each in Wilkos last year and was amazed to get a few berries in the first year ..... the bushes have all grown quite a bit in the first season...and I'm expecting them to do well this year....if you are not in too big a hurry/have overspent elsewhere (like me).... then I would recommend buying this way and being patient.

Hey.. I noticed you're in my neck of the woods. I've just put my name down for a plot in basingstoke (I'm number 2 on the list) how long did you have to wait?  (I'm not impatient honest!!) ::)

The Dorset Blueberry Company...excellent.

I have 10 bushes in pots, 3 different kinds and my yeild is great.

I got my Sunshine Blue from Blackmoor Nurseries.  Got my Chandler from ........ erm Thompson & Morgan I think.......  both were planted last year, the Chandler earlier that the Sunshine Blue.  The Blackmoor is a better plant has more buds than the T&M, but i'm hoping for good things from both.

Both have amazing buds on, and totally separate colours.

I've only got two plants really due to lack of space, but as all my raspberry canes failed, I could have fitted in another 3 pots !  Will measure the pots tomorrow, but i'm in Merry Tiller's suggested range.
