Title: Own Up - what's everyone sowing??
Post by: Jitterbug on January 19, 2007, 13:27:10
OK, I'll go first --- I've put a sweet potatoe into water this week for start getting slips as I refuse to pay for somthing that is relatively easy to do yourself with the correctt planning and time).  I will also be putting some onion seeds into the heated propogator this week-end.  Also, is it too early to sow cauliflower seeds - the 'Grow your Own' Almanac saw not??

If I get down to the lottie and it's not been blown away this week-end I would like to try and get some broad beans in and some Feltham First Peas.

Come on now -- don't be shy - own up!

Erm, nothing yet!  Being the most disorganised person in the world I haven't yet planned what I'm going to grow this year!  Done plenty of daydreaming though!  Think I might start some sweet peas because they are a definite for me again.  Got some Borlotti beans that I will try again (no success last year) can I start them now?  Will be good to see what everyone else is up to...

Already have:
- about 20 sweet potato slips potted (and still twenty on the potato). They are on a windowsill over a radiator since december. They are still doing fine, although three of them got yellow leaves, then black stems. With so many slips this was not a problem.
- 36 broad beans (threetimes white) in toilet rolls, outside in a box. They ar now about 5cm high with four leaves.
- 6 seeds of Aubergine Diamond in a minigreenhouse on the same windowsill. This variety will take a long time to germinate, it says on the packet (real seed).
- a first sowing of early peas called redflowering gray peas (but then in Dutch).

The red currant, white currant and black currant branches I put in a bucket of soil in october grew roots.

And this weeks Kitchen Garden Magazine got me inspired to grow potatoes in a bag.

Nothing!!!

I planned it that way, because I am off for a few days in mid Feb and have no one to look after things.

I'll soon catch up!

Nothing, it's either in (overwintering onions, garlic, etc.) or it's too early.

Broad beans up and blowing over (but experience says they have a terrific root system by now, and will spring up as strong bushes when they get more light and warmth), potatoes chitting.

Sweet potato slips rooting in glass of water (daughter complained her sweet potatoes were sprouting, so I quickly collected them).

Some early peas up and looking a bit battered, but I  am hoping they will behave like the broad beans.

I am away for most of April and May, so am trying to stave off disaster by starting early.

sowed aquadulce claudia in Nov but pheasants/mice ate those, so sowed peas and sutton bb last week.  At home i have my 1st early pots chitting, some more garlic in pots on windowsill and sweetpeas.  Am also going to sow more bbeans in loo rolls when i have saved up enough.

this weekend am going to sow in my fancy propagator alpine strawbs, ailsa craig onions and soem other stuff but i cant remember.

apart from broad beans hopefully this weekend, straight into the soil - i will not be starting with anything until the end of march - going away for a week then and noone to look after seedlings.
i figure i can sow the day before we leave - things should be up when we are back 6 days later.....

got some radishes on the window sill just so i could see something green !

if I survive getting from the back door to the shed today, then i'm going to sow the second lot of peas.

i need to shift a ton of clay from the back border to the front but just can't see it happening today.

i sowed some aubergine black beauty last weekend and they're in the leccy propogator in the spare room.  I was so late last year that fine looking plants produced nothing edible.  I'll sow some more later as standbys.

and need to check all the various babies in the surviving g/h.  i've actually still got one unidentified pepper just turning red now !

i also wanted to get my black bucketed broad beans in the ground, but they might swim away if i did that today.

can't find the enthusiasm to get out there though atm, still blowing a hoolie and chucking it down.

i know i should be grateful that we're still all one one piece, but i'm bored with the weather now.

OH has sowed some pepper seeds and tomato seeds (sweet million).  Today I am going to sow some antirhinum and sweet peas (we already have some growing in our cold greenhouse). We are chitting our potatoes, and might have a go at some aubergines, but apart from that thought it was a little early for anything else. busy_lizzie

Nothing yet - very unlike me.  :-\

However, by the end of the month I should have hunions, chillis, peppers, aubs, toms and sweetpeas in.

Well, we don't have anything sowed or planted yet, apart from some garlic overwintering in our back garden.  We have so much work to do on the lottie before we can even begin planting anything!  I think maybe by mid - end Feb i'll have started some seeds off in a seed tray on the windowsill, and by that stage we might also have some blinking paths laid on the lottie! x

Nothing yet-will wait a month or so. It`s not so much getting things like peppers, aubies and toms to germinate as keeping them going through the cold and low light levels.

put broad beans in yesterday, about a foot high!
Overwinter leeks snips sprouts cabbage etc

Other plot is covered in fodder raddish and tares and just covered mustard with straw and poo cos the weeds were winning there.

These pictures are worth a thousand words Andy, that's the best pic of green manuring overwinter I've ever seen, even in the books! I'm going to try green manuring for sure, but not til next year - still got to figure out how it works with mulching. Ffascinated by MikeB's post on growing tares and tomatoes in rotation and really want to give it a go - like mulching, it sounds too good to be true, so it probably is (true) ;)

currently in planning stage but on plot are garlic, cabbage, sprouts, japanese onion, early carrots, and some carrots and last years late planted onions not yet harvested.

I have a tray of compost outside and will be starting off some early peas and beans.

I will publish my plan when its finished  :D

I'm not sowing/chitting until next week, maybe the one after.  I'm itching to get going, but know it's too early for me yet.

I will be growing:

Spring Onion ~ White Lisbon
Second Early Potatoes ~ Catriona
White Onion sets ~ Stuttgarter Giant
Lettuce ~ Mixed Salad Leaves
Rocket
Leek ~ Musselburgh
Parsnip ~ Gladiator f1
Tomatoes ~ Gardeners Delight

And the boys are growing

Parsley ~ Moss Curled
and Sunflowers.

Once I've finished digging and filling my raised beds, hopefully tomorrow if it doesn't rain, then I can start chitting my spuds. ;D

I'm completely jealous. As of this weekend the allotment is covered in about 8 inches of snow. Up until now the weeds have thrived in our up-until-now mild winter, so we'll have lots of digging before planting anything in April.

While I love Stockholm, I wish I had more months to garden with.

Enjoy the seedlings everyone!

Thanks SS, chuffed with that remark.
I am very pleased how it went, will def use fodder raddish again but that must be rotated and the Tares although a bit patchy

The mustard probably failed cos it was sown too late.

Another plot used rye grass, it looks like a perfect lawn but no doubt will work well.

Will see how the thick layer of straw paper and poo works too when spring gets here.

my radishes that were planted in modules were looking all leggy and falling over (plant deeper next time) so i spent last night on the spare room bed putting each one neck deep in a loo roll with a sprinkle of cinnamon (another experiment - never have radishes been so cosseted) and I had a bit of compost left over so started 6 Tigerella toms while I was at it.

There's a free packet with one of the mags this month so if that lot don't work, i've got a back up plan.

;D

Been late with sowing the last couple of years so we're attempting an early start.

Sowed broad beans, early carrots, parsnips, onions, lettuce, peppers, aubergines, tomatoes.  Some will be staying under glass but beans, carrots, parsnips and onions will be going out when the cold snap's gone.

Didn't get the first lot of tomato seedlings into sufficient light quick enough this time so they're all stringy.  Might bin them and be a bit more attentive with the next lot.  ::)

Also started kitchen herbs: rocket, parsley, coriander and basil.  And useful herbs: chamomile, feverfew, meadowsweet, self-heal, skullcap, St John's wort, vervain and valerian.  I'm determined to get a proper herb garden started this year.

Well something was planted 8 1/2 months ago as I should v. soon be having 2nd child (I hope it's soon anyway).  The lottie has been planned and re-planned and I haven't been able to do anything else for last month so it's waiting for OH to actually do some of the physical work down there now!!!  Although he doesn't seem as keen now!

That's v. funny manicscousers.  Although his way to go through labour is to just keep pouring himself more booze - if the last ones anything to go by.  I don't really want him applying that to the lottie.  That's the problem with home births.  I'm sure they might have something to say if we were in hospital!!!

Once my first six toms have germinated and I've potted them up, I'll put them out in the heated g/h, aubs also.  Til then, or if I get scared, they'll stay in the cool bedroom.

Supposed to have visitors in February, hope they don't plan on staying long.  I need their bed as the nursery!

;D
