Title: I've got an allotment!!!
Post by: carolinej on January 18, 2007, 18:54:28
Hello :)

got my allotment today. It is about 5M by 12M. The last owner had covered it with black plastic, which has curled up in places letting the weeds through, but generally looks like it will be easy to dig.

There is an area of strawberry plants which has become overgrown, and an area boarded as if it was going to be a raised bed.

It looks a mess at the moment, but I'm looking forward to getting it sorted when the weather changes.

Too wet for photos today, but will post one when the weather improves ;D.

Rhymney Valley, near Caerphilly (the cheese place!).

One good thing about living here s that allotments are not hard to come by. Mind you, the right weather to work on one......that's another thing!!!

No, unfortunately the greenhouse isnt mine :( Yes, the posts are stable ;D. Havent met the neighbours yet, but the one side is fenced in for chickens, so am going to see if I can get my free range eggs from there. The other side seems to have been unused for at least one season, even though someone is paying for it. If they give it up in the future, I may see if I can have it, as it has loads of raspberry and blackcurrants on it.

Thanks for all the positive comments :D

Having taken on a plot that was mostly covered in black plastic myself (definitely a bonus), I'd advise you not to remove it until just before you're ready to sow/plant/dig- it's amazing how quickly the weeds return! And in fact if you fix the plastic down firmly, you can grow through it- I've grown courgettes the last two years on the same patch which has never been uncovered or dug since I got it!

That sounds like good advice :) I've managed to get it all straightened out so it covers virtually the whole thing now.

I will be building raised beds, so will recycle the plastic as a weed surpressor under woodchip for the paths. I wont neet to make too many holes, as it is already peppered with them. Must have been down a long time ???

This will also be my first season as a plotter as I have also just got a plot 7.5m by 25M. I was not blessed with any covering except weeds!

Only a quarter has been worked in the last year.  I spent most of Saturday removing old runnerbeans, rotting potato's, nettles and brambles.

I did find a dozen strawberry plants tucked away under some netting so some small blessings.

I have built my compost bin from good old pallets but I need to get a shed to make my tea in.

I am looking forward to many an hour digging. I hope you do to.

Another new plotter

Congtatulations on getting your new plot Caroline.  Looks a nice size and good idea to cover it to weaken some of that couch grass.  I am sure you will get it licked into shape and ideal to get it now before everything starts growing again. best wishes, busy_lizzie

Hi humble bumble, welcome to the forum (http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e220/supersprout/smilies/hello.gif)
If those weeds are healthy you've got good soil. Hope you have a happy and productive year ahead on the plot! SSx

My weeds are very healthy and vigourous.  I also have a very healthy Dock which I will be keeping until I clear all my nettles, it came in useful this weekend.

I'm trying to plan my plot at the moment, all I have is where I won't be putting my tatties, which are happily chitting on my windowsill.

Hi Humble Bumble this is your new digging apprentice and supplier of compost pallets.  Not expecting payment for work undertaken but looking forward to receiving fresh produce as it arrives.  Gloves now obtained for very junior apprentices.  Looking forward to many a happy hour in the open air.  Good luck to all other new holders. :)

Welcome Silver Surfer.

Will you be off to Whitchurch on Saturday to get a few new ideas?

I may have found volunteers to make walkways, all I need to do is supply plans.

Have a good one and don't ache too much, take care of those old knees!!!
