Title: pumpkins and crossing (promiscuity)
Post by: OliveOil on January 17, 2007, 19:02:52
Just another daft question of mine... LOL

If i grow 10 different squashes/pumpkins... will they cross in that the fruit will differ from what it should be on each plant? or is it only the seed that is affected... ie. saved seeds wouldnt grow true!???

Olive the seeds will be affected you will get a multitude of shapes, colour ,sizes, forms out of one plant so if you only want to grow specific types it is best to use fresh seed every year if you are not bothered what they are use your own seed

Only the seeds will be affected.  If you bought the seeds this year the squashes will come true but then they might cross fertilise so if you save the seeds for next year you will get a jumble.  Or maybe some wonderful new variety.
