I absolutely adore asparagus,especially cooked with butter and garlic and thought I'd give them a go this year. I know you need a special bed because they are a long term project. Do they prefer any kind of soil/conditions? And..what to buy and when and what do you do with them and when..any asparagus basic tips really?

My experience over the years has been that it is well worth spending some money on getting the Dutch bred male hybrids, one year old crowns.
I have tried everything over the last 40 years, seeds, anonymous crowns from garden centres, named crowns from breeders. I've had my present allotment for six years, planted the male hybrids four years ago, and am thrilled with the results. The others did from badly to well, but these are magnificent. Given that they are to last for 20 years or more, the original outlay is very small.
One example is "Gijnlim" at prices from £13 - £15 for 10 one year crowns. If you google the name, there are plenty of suppliers.
