I have looked at the link for this product. It looks good and seems a good idea and investment, but before I part with my hard earned dosh could anyone please tell me:
As the paper decomposes anyway, Is it worth buying or does the pot come apart when watering seedlings each day prior to planting outdoors? I don't want to be watering and the paper & it suddenly become too mushy and lose my seedling as a little plant just prior to transplanting. ???
the paper pots I make (using a jam jar) hold together ok and if anything you have to rip the bottom out of them when lanting up. Never had a bad apilage with them and I have never seen any evidence of them come harvest time.
I used to use them for parsnips and still use them for sweetcorn, some beans and celery.
I cant see the point in buying a device when any kind of jar, tin, cup etc will make a pot in less than 30 seconds
I use an offcut of 2inch plastic pipe for sweetcorn & runners
can someone post how to do the folds

I think these are brilliant because the plants sit snugly together and thanks to the capillary action the pots are always evenly watered.

took me ages to work out how it all folds together
but I made one in the end, it wasnt too bad,
but the flaps are annoying, and I remeber having
trouble making the pot stand upright.
Are there any other methods?

I took me a while to work it out too ;), but once you get the hang of it it's straightforward. I agree about the flaps being annoying; I staple them!
You can experiment with different newspapers to make different sized pots.

Yes, tear newspaper in half, then half again. Wrap one piece around whatever you're using & glue the end, I use a pritstick, leave a couple of inches overhanging the end. Twist the overhang & shove it up inside the tube then pull it all free, job done. You can make loads in half an hour

I make mine by the same method but I find if you fold over the last corner at the end, it stays in place. ie;
fold half a sheet of broad sheet newspaper in half top to bottom, wrap around cardboard toilet roll inner 'til you get to the last 3", leaving 1/8 t.roll showing at top, fold over top corner to about 1/2 way, finish rolling,twist surplus at bottom and poke up the hole.Remove t.roll and Bob's your Uncle.
Have just made half-a-dozen pots using the jam-jar method. Brilliant - and so easy to make them as deep as needed ;). How many times should the newspaper be wound round the jars to be sure they don't disintegrate too soon?
I shall be using them in the base trays of my old green modules this year. I always find the 24 sections to be too shallow for rooting some seeds. No more empty loo rolls for me either - I always hated the black sooty mould that appeared over time ::).

I like to use paper pots too. The only problem I find is that, if you dont completely bury the paper, it can work as a wick in hot weather and dry the plant out. If the compost has sunk too much, I tear the top edge of the pot off to make sure nothing sticks out.
Always makes me wonder though, if the rotting paper takes any nitrogen out of the soil while the plant is growing.

I cut off the bottom half of my plastic milk bottles, and then use a skewer to make a load of holes in the bottom. Works for me....and they are reusable:)

They start getting a bit mushy, usually just before planting out but the roots hold it all together by then

I don't think Prittstick is terribly toxic. Our kids used to eat it when they were little, given half a chance. :o
Oh, and they did survive. ;D
