Title: just got my shed
Post by: vee on January 10, 2007, 17:22:14
I had my new shed delivered today and I just wanted to tell you about it as not too many people get excited about sheds. :o :o

I can't tell you how pleased I am about it, it's the best christmas present ever!
I've had my plot for just over two years and the number of times I've got there with all my stuff and then it's started to rain - well you know what I mean.

Now I can sit in the shed with my Alan Titchmarsh radio in the shape of a plantpot (one of last year's xmas pressies!), drink coffee and laugh at the weather. 8)

Going to B&Q tomorrow to buy some preserver to paint it with. The shed men said to get oil based stuff, which rules out the Cuprinol Garden shades stuff I had planned in a sort of sagey green.
Any advice about nice coloured preserver which does the job as well?

You could paint over the preservative when it is dry so you can still have sage green. My shed is painted in red, blue, yellow and gold stripes on top of the presevative ::) ;D.

Wish I had one - but really pleased for you.  Have just read out your message to the OH but did not pick up the hint.  Will have to look out for a freebie in the local papers.

Enjoy the views and warmth

yay  ;D ;D

Hi vee,

congratulations. I don`t know what I`d do without my sheds. I`m up to three now, on two plots. They all have their different uses. Now you can create a compound in front of them with a little lawn and flower beds, and chairs and stuff.  ;D ahem! outdoor work space then...

If its not too late think about your base now. Either get the shed high or low on a good concrete base with no earth gaps. I wish someone had told me that sooner ...

As I have created the perfect winter home for rats under my tool shed that takes a lot of time, effort and money to mainain in perfect condition for them to keep coming back to.

Best of luck, Col

I painted my chicken house [old summer house] with Cuprinol in bright blue about 4 years ago & it's still fine - there was probably some sort of preservative already on it which shows it can be done.

I too got a shed for Xmas and what a difference it makes. :D We have had many cups of coffee over the last few week, we plan to have sausage sandwhices this Saturday. Just make sure you make it safe and cover the windows. We have put 2 grave board across and then stapled some bubblewrap over the window on the inside so you cant see in but let some light in. It was amazing how much shed envy i had before. Sad that we get so excited over these things!!!!

On our site we are only allowed  forest green or brown. I believe the neighbours complained.

I have used some wooden planks to make decking on 2 sides of my shed. I say shed but its really the back of a lorry. It is the back of an 8ton lorry with a roller door on the rear & Steel frame. I have boarded it out on the inside and put a sloping roof over the roof that it has to catch rainwater.

One shed on our site is an old container (lorry) painted a tasteful green. Sadly we have a decaying 1960's camper in one corner of another plot... don't know how we will be rid of it!

That sounds fabulous! Would love to have painted mine in lovely bright stripes but as my plot's right next a footpath, I thought it might make it too noticable and attract the local vandals - have gone for completely the opposite and painted it black with white window bars and roof edging!

The final touch is a silver horseshoe over the door for luck!

Hi Tabbycat, we have a lot of trouble with vandals too (I recently had a spade stolen) :(. Thing is they can't break into my shed since it doesn't have a door only a striped canvas drape over the front so it is even brighter than the paint scheme makes it sound :D. It makes people smile ;D though some of my fellow plot holders seem to think it is some serious attempt at style rather than just funny which it is supposed to be ;).

Well I've been to B&Q and bought a dark green preservative, and will probably paint it sage green over the top when it's weathered a bit. I also got a shiny new padlock and looked at all the rugs and was very tempted, but I resisted.

I just hope the roof is still on the shed - the wind has been so wild and noisy here that I've been imagining it going up in the air like the beginning of the Wizard of Oz!

I also just happened to go into Wilkinsons and Woolies on the way to B&Q and got some BOGOF seeds. ;D

Talking about other sorts of shed, the most unusual shed on our site is a pale blue and white former burger bar. Fortunately the person who has the plot does nothing at all so it's well hidden in a corner surrounded by brambles.
Thanks for all your good wishes :) :)

brilliant, getting a shed, isn't it, we used old rubber car mats for the floor, it means it doesn't get slippy when it's wet, and we can shake the soil off, when it dries up, that is  :D

I fixed fencing wire over the corrugated plastic roof of my potting shed and added extra weight of wood to the front overhang because it was lifting in strong winds.
(Just attach it to the frame work on one side throw it over and fix it tightly to the frame on the other) It doesn`t lift now.

Larkspur - I never lock my shed either - mind you, mine does have a door!  :) When all the sheds were broken into over Xmas, mine and my neighbours were the only ones not to get damaged or have anything taken - we are the only ones who don't have padlocks (we have nothing worth nicking either  ;D)

Tabby

Thats the secret nothing worth nicking, tools scrounged or from boot sales plastic bins to shift stuff not wheelbarrows anything that might be resellable hidden in compost bins or under plastic sheets. I keep all my good equipment at home and only take it to the lotty when I am doing serious digging, hoeing etc. Worst that I have had is the "funny" shed kicked to pieces but I just nailed it back together again. It was a gift from someone who didn't want it and has no value :D ;D.
If you want to know what the wierd thing looks like see my avatar ::) :-[  ;D

I've just come back from visiting my new shed and it was all just as I'd left it on Wednesday when it was put up.  :o :o

What a relief that was - I'd been imagining the worst with the awful weather we've had round here. Now for the exciting bit of putting stuff in it...

Will there be room for me , I wonder ;)
The idea of rubber mats is a good one Manic - there were some in Wilkinsons for £1.99 and perhaps I won't need the wire over the roof after all Columbus, but it's a good idea for the future.
Larkspur, your shed looks like a beach hut - I love it 8)
